I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A LITTLE provoked with the person who gets her Christmas shopping all done by September and her cards all mailed by December first. And stores who set out their Christmas merchandise before they take down the Halloween trick-or-treat candy displays give me a pain. They are season jumpers, it seems to me. Such people regard themselves as clever and efficient, and perhaps they maybe. But they also are somewhat depressing to the rest of us who like to enjoy our holidays separately as they come. - o THE OTHER DAY 1 SAW ONE of my friends lugging home a bunch of Christmas wrappings. She said she had about half of her Christmas shopping done and I kidded about jumping the gun. We are still mowing the lawn and going to the beach. Suddenly, it dawned upon me that it is almost December 1, and my friend isn't a season jumper at all. If anything, it is I who am a season foot-dragger I - o- I'M NOT KNOCKING LIFE in this delightful climate, but there is one drawback to it. We have Just one holiday here - Fourth of July. At least it seems like it. We buy a Thanksgiving turkey and eat it on the Fourth of July. Christmas bells jingle and we celebrate Independence Day. We color Easter eggs the night before the Fourth of July. This roses in January bit can be very confusing and I occasionally long for the days when we had a sensible sequence of spring, summer, autumn and winter. - o- OF COURSE, IF WE HAD regulation seasons here, we would be able to go fishing only five or six months annually Instead of 14 months out of the year as we do now. I wouldn't like that for as you may have gathered, I have become hooked on angling. . I've even got a couple of fish stories to tell, somewhat in the class of those Father used to bring home from the Smoke Shop or Henry Becker's. - o RECENTLY WE WERE FISHING in a -boat out on the bay. I wasn't catching much so I put down my pole for a minute to reach for a sandwich. While my back was turned something hit my bait and the line,' rod, reel and everything shot out of the boat like a bat out of you-know-where I There was a moment of shocked silence after which I gathered I wasn't exactly Father's little darling right then. The end of my fishing days was apparently upon me. Unless, of course, I could dig up $30 or so for a new fishing outfit because, "that one you just had is a half mile down the bay by this time. - o« HAVING NO APPROPRIATE DEFENSE for my crime, I decided to keep my mouth shut, eat my sandwich (quite a trick in itself) and enjoy the scenery. Father went on fishing. Pretty soon he felt something on the end of his line. He started reeling in and found he had hooked a piece of fish line. Things looked a little brighter when he said, "Maybe this Is your line and if I can pull all the line off your reel, we might even be able to get .the pole." He TIEflSettef than that r he immediately, pulled up=. 'the'rod 'and 'reel and the'line,'he also started reelingron my pole. There was a fish on It - a 3 1/2 Ib. sheephead I Now, the question is - who can be credited with the fish - I who hooked it, or Father who landed it ? I do know that if I hadn't been along and he came home with a story like that, I would never have believed him I - o- WE HAD A GRAND VISIT WITH Nell and Ted Larson over the Thanksgiving holiday. They are nicely settled in their apartment at Clearwater for the winter months. Naturally, Ted and father went fishing.. Nell and I fixed the gobbler and gabbled and gabbled. The Larsons had just received a phone call from their daughter, Meredith saying she had just made them grandparents for the llth time, although Nell and Ted seemed as happy about it as if it had been their first. It was a 9 1/2 Ib. boy, which makes three each of boys and girls for Meredith and her husband, Dr. William Bobbins who live at Madison, Wise.
