The Phillies' veteran second baseman collected his second home run and fourth RBI of the game to break a tie In the sixth Inning and give Philadelphia a 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs. "1 don't think about it," Morgan said of reaching his 40th birthday. "When they asked me how it felt to be 30,1 felt the same way. As long as 1 feel good, that's all that counts." Morgan, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth and also doubled and singled to finish 4-for-S, cracked a 3-2 pitch from losing reliever Lee Smith 4-10, high over the right field wall leading off the eighth for his 16th homer. He won't have to call the Expos or Pirates to tell them happened. "Even If It's a one-game lead (it's now 2), they have to win one more game to tie," Morgan said.

"If we have a two-game lead, they have to win three more Just to win it. If we keep winning, we don't need any help from anyone." Morgan, nagged by a leg injury most of the season, went into the game batting only .203. Me has also had to withstand pressure from Phillies president Bill Giles and a number of fans who feel it Is time for rookie sensation Juan Samuel to take over at second base. Rookie John Stefero's two- out single capped a two-run llth inning to rally the Orioles to an 8-7 victory over Milwaukee, eliminating the Brewers from the race in the AL East. 20-6 Tyrone High's Jayvee footballers racked up their first win of the season last night on the road, smothering Philipsburg-Osceola with superb defense to carve out a 20-6 victory at Memorial Field. The Baby Eagles, now 1-1, corralled no less than five turnovers with fumble recoveries by Mahlon Osterhout (2), Dallas Heaton, Ron Ayers and Murray Fetzer and didn't surrender the hosts' only TD until 1:46 remained in the game In shutting down the Little Mounties. And Kerry Cowher, Brian Snyder "and Chip Lehman each registered a quarterback sack to bolster the defensive effort. Tyrone nursed a shaky 6-0 lead at halftlme when Mike Woodring scored from four yards out to cap a 70-yard first quarter drive. Fetzer's fumble recovery 'set up TD no, 2 in the third quarter.

Wopdrlng banged in again from the two to cap this march, after Fetzer connected on a 20-yard pass to Tim Golden to spark the surge, Fetzer booked up again with Kevin Soellner for 9 45-yard completion to set up the final score for the Baby Eagles. Criag Hammond got this one on a 2-yard run and Jonas Johnson rushed for the only successful PAT of the game. "The Raiders have a great defense," the Miami quarterback said. "You can't run against them and you can't pass against them. That doesn't leave too much else." Sure it does.

There's always the kicking game. Dolphins got in position for one field goal attempt when it mattered. And Uwe von Schamann shanked it. And that was that. Tackle Greg Townsend recovered a fumble and rambled 66 yards for a touchdown, climaxing a brilliant Los Angeles defensive performance that powered the NFL Standings American Conference East Pet.

Closing In On O.J.'s No. 2 Spot: Franco Off to Best Start In Seven Years ByPOHLASMITH UPI Sports Writer PITTSBURGH (UPI) Why is Pittsburgh Steelers' running back Franco Harris off to such an uncharacteristically fast start? "Happenstance," Coach Chuck Noll said Monday.

Noll wasn't trying to be funny; nor was he belittling the accomplishments of the 33- year-old running back, who has rushed for 260 yards in three games this season his best start since he gained 264 in the first three games of 1976. Tigers' Treesa, State College Head Eastern Golf Qualifier Hollidaysburg's Mark Treese finished No. 1 in a field of 20 qualifiers and State College's Little Lions copped team honors at the 1983 Eastern Section qualifier for the District 6 Golf Championships yesterday at the State College Elks CC. None of Tyrone Area High's four entries Charlie O'Rourke (52-56-108), Dave Keller (62-60-122), Shane Hanna (65-58-123) and Brad Laird (63-62-125) made the cut for the Pist. 6 Tourney, scheduled Oct 3 at Sinking Valley CC.

Treese and Little Lion teammates Larry Walker and Mike Thomas matched 76s for the day's low among some 44 entries, but Treese earned top honors in a sudden-death playoff. State College posted team low score (233), followed by Hollldaysburg (249) and Osc. (252), who qualified four girls for the Dist. 6 Championships. "We're trying to run the football right now, and that's a big part of it," Noll said, while reviewing the Steelers' 40-28 victory over the Houston Oilers Sunday.

"He's going to get the ball quite a bit the way we're playing now. But if we get behind, he won't get the ball as much." The Steelers had 276 net yards rushing against the Oilers, and Harris accounted for 115 yards of them. His 260 yards this season leaves the 12-year veteran Just 33 yards behind O.J. Simpson, who is the NFL's second all-time rushing leader with 11,236 yards. Noll also explained -why he thinks Harris doesn't seem to be affected by growing older.

"You guys over-estimate the effects of age," Noll said. "I don't think it stops people. Your attitude towards age does that first. You get tired of doing things. "And, besides, Franco has been relatively Injury-free over his career and injuries are things that help to slow you down." Noll said he was pleased Meeting Notices The Tyrone Area Basketball Boosters Club will meet Sept.

They rolled up 458 yards net offense and held Houston to 311 yards, including just 57 rushing. "It was a very physical football team (Houston)," Noll said.

"We expected it to be that way. Our people held their own. Our ability to put pressure on the passer helped considerably." Noll praised the play of defensive linemen Keith Willis, Keith Gary and Gabe Rivera for their defense against the pass. Other players complimented by Noll were quarterback Cliff Stoudt, for his "performance handling the running game," kicker Gary Anderson, who converted four field goals; the running and pass-catching of second-year running back Walter Abercrombie, and the play of center Mike Webster. Abercrombie had two big plays.

He caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Stoudt and also ran 50 yards for another score. "A day like that should help his confidence quite a bit," Noll said. The Steelers had three turnovers all in the fourth quarter, when the team had started making numerous substitutions, and Noll said they may have resulted from overconfidence. "An attitude kind of permeates a team sometimes when you make wholesale substitutions (hat the game is over," he said. Noll said the team suffered numerous "bumps and bruises" in the game, but only one serious injury.

Rookie defensive back Eric Williams suffered a sprained ankle on the opening klckoff, and Noll said the initial prognosis is Williams will be sidelined six to eight weeks..
