GHOUL, from Page IE ten by Sweed and Cleveland TVradio reporter Mike Olszewski. If you surf the Internet you also can track the Ghoul universe at www.theghoul.com. And over on Sweed's monster mash home turf of Cleveland, you can even purchase a new soda pop called Turn Blue Ghoul Brew, a blue-tinted root beer. So yep, the tasteless TV clown who blew up a gazillion Froggy the Gremlin dolls, told everyone to Turn blue!" and obsessively joked about that Polish gourmet delicacy he called "kielbasy," all the while showing slices of cinematic gems like "Attack of the Giant Leeches" and "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow," is riding a new wave of campy quasi-fame. "We still toss in the burps and the ow-ow-ow's," says Sweed of his infamously puerile on-air behavior, speaking from Ghoul Central in Cleveland.

"I still appeal to anyone who's got a twisted psyche." That's comforting to know. Sweed, who's 49 going on 12, was just 22 when he first hit the airwaves as the Ghoul in 1971. He essentially inheritedthe act of his mentor, the late Ernie Anderson, a legendary Cleveland pop culture icon who ruled Friday night TV as ga-ga Ghoulardi in the 1960s. largely echoed Ghoulardi. But the Ghoul did his own relentlessly lowbrow thing.

And he's once again milking the bent memories of his youthful days as a rude-attitude TV personality in Cleveland and Detroit "Basically, since 1971, it's taken all those years to achieve such remarkably low levels of mediocrity," says Sweed. "No one is able is able to do it as well as me. It's freeze-dried instant insanity. And let's just say, political correctness is not in my handbook never was, never will be." Of course, the days in the early 1970s when schoolteachers and church groups complained about The Ghoul" are long gone. In an age of Jerry Springer and "South Park," Sweed's raucous brand of slapstick may even seem a tad tame.

"I've gone from 'most dangerous man in TV to a promoter of family values," jokes Sweed. The kids who were my fans in the 1970s and '80s are now bringing their own kids to see me. "One mother told me she and her kids love to watch my new show. She said, 'Finally, they're putting something on TV the whole family can enjoy and be nuts How utterly reassuring. Ghoul Power to the people! TV critic Mike Duffy can be reached at 1-313-222-6520 or by E-mail at duffyfreepress.com For Sayuri, there are many bad days, as she spends years in servitude until she begins her rigorous training in everything from dance to pouring tea, has the price of her virginity negotiated, finds a patron, weathers World War II and eventually triumphs over her vicious rival.

A large part of the appeal of the novel is the enormous detail about that exotic subculture, but also the hope Sayuri carries with her that she will someday be with "the Chairman," an important businessman who shows her kindness early on. And what of the geisha today? Golden reports that though there still are geisha, women enter it voluntarily at the age of 18 and only stay in it a few years. "It's not the kind of misery it once was," he says, "but men still go to geisha houses to be entertained and there's still geisha there to entertain them. Their virginity is no longer sold, but they still have patrons." Successful geisha are what Westerners would think of as kept women. "I don't think anyone reveres their social status," says Golden, who views the geisha world as an exaggeration of the larger Japanese society.

"It's not something you probably want your daughter to grow up to do." Linnea Lannon can be reached at 313-222-6620 or by E-mail at lannonfreepress.com Sweed began working as a gofer on Anderson's show when he was 13. Eventually, Anderson said adios to life as Ghoulardi and headed to California, where he became the longtime on-air promotional voice of ABC (This week on The Luvwvw in the 1970s and '80s. Meanwhile, back in the Midwest, Sweed was doing hellacious homage as the Ghoul. His bizarro on-air getup including fright wig, fake beard, fake mustache and black-rimmed sunglasses with the left lens missing PLtASE CUP AND MAIL WITH YOU GIFT TODAY Complete flmnhsgiuing GEISHA, from Page IE "I think it's safe to say I got just about everything wrong, really," says Golden without embarrassment over a sushi lunch on a recent visit to the Detroit area. "For example, I didn't know how to put on makeup.

I got it completely wrong. The reality, of course, turned out to be much more interesting than I had imagined. I didn't understand how geisha trained. I didn't understand the importance of kimono in geisha culture. I didn't understand when they wore that makeup and when they didn't, I didn't know they had dressers.

I didn't understand the importance of the relationships between older sisters and younger sisters." In short, he knew nothing. He set to work again, this time coming up with an 850-page book, again told in the third person. When friends who read it thought it dry, Golden, who also has a master's degree in English from Boston University and has taught writing, moved to the first person and began with the geisha's childhood, when she is sold into what amounts to slavery. That worked. In the fall of 1996 his agent sold the book to Knopf, which wanted it on the 1997 fall list Only problem: He had to cut 250 pages in a matter of weeks.

This he did, and he describes the process "it's like cleaning a room of furniture" with more detachment and cheer than you might expect given how much time and energy he'd put into the book by then. The rest, as they say, is history. "Memoirs of a Geisha" was that rare first novel that gets rave reviews and huge sales (about 600,000 so far; an average first-novel sells about It has also appears to have become a book club favorite even though it's a hardcover the evidence is anecdotal but Knopf posted book club questions on its Web site in August after being alerted by bookstores that it was a popular choice and even more readers are expected to embrace it when it's published in paperback in January. It not only sold to Hollywood "Once you get over the hump that studios don't normally gravitate to stories about Asian females, 'Memoirs of a Geisha' screams movie," says producer Douglas Wick but it was picked up by the premier director of our time. If Golden had an easier time of it than his geisha, who endures years of real misery before living happily ever after, he is not any less glad that it all worked out "I was in a different position" than many first-time writers, allows Golden, referring to his wealth.

"I wasn't going to put my family in the poor house" by working on a book rather than going into the family business. But his extended family his cousin is the publisher of the New York Times didn't understand why he was writing fiction, "and when it was getting on 10 years, they really worried," says Golden, the father of two. "They thought I was staring at my navel." So "the big change has been in I I I I Arthur Golden's final version of "Memoirs of a Geisha" resulted in that rare first novel that both sells big and gets rave reviews. that my family has stopped worrying about me and shifted to being proud," smiles Golden. And his immediate family sees him less because he's been on the road for so much of the last year and a half, although he's finally told his publisher to stop booking him.

Arnold Rusoff, a translator and friend of Golden's for nearly two decades, thinks "Geisha" has changed his friend, but not in any sinister, inflated-ego way. "If taken the pressure off of not having succeeded before," says Rusoff, who describes Golden as fun to be around, very smart, well-read and generous. Rusoff was in Japan on business when Golden was interviewing the former geisha, and got to visit a wig shop with them. He marvels at his friend's ability to retain information and his facility with languages. Did Rusoff, whose name pops up at the beginning of "Geisha" as a little joke, help Golden? "No, not at all," says Rusoff.

"He is one of those few people who can pick up a language quickly and learn it well. Arthur hasn't studied Japanese in at least 15 years but he still can speak it and read it welL" Richard Anders, the publisher of Boston Software News and other software newspapers, has breakfast with Golden once a week when he's in town, and admits Golden's long project "was a bit of a mystery to me." The two have talked a lot about writing over their coffees. "He really understands the writing process in an intellectual way," says Anders. "Some writers have a mystical view of the craft Arthur is very analytical about it" So it would seem. Talking about writing clearly excites Golden, who cites Kazuo Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day" and Robert Graves' Claudius" as particular favorites, and who is very clear on what he set out to do in "Geisha." "A book can be about an idea, or a character or a story or a setting," he observes.

"This book began as a book about a setting, the world of geisha." '1 Character came next then the story itself, which was a bright light on the character. "Anyone can have a good day," says Golden thoughtfully. "Hie question is what do you do on a bad day. That's when you're being tested. In a very tangible sense, a bad day shows your innermost essence more than a good day." i i IP1 We need your help to serve our annual Thanksgiving dinner and provide additional hot meals and other essential services to hungry, homeless, hurting people in the Detroit area this fall.
