4B DETROIT FREE PRESSMONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1998 EiiiTfilllll'SlI ROAD CLOSINGS Robert Bagno: Italian food marketer helped those in need Carlton Smith: Gathering with family made heart sing BY NIRAJ WAR1KOO Free Press Staff Writer Carlton L. Smith, a retired sales engineer at Michigan Bell who enjoyed his large family, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at his Hazel Park home. He was 74. Mr. Smith was born in Ecorse and served in Europe in the U.S.

Army during World War II. At Michigan Bell, where he Carlton Smith worked for 44 years, he helped set up telephone systems for companies. Mr. Smith enjoyed bowling and singing American classics. "We would be at gatherings, and he would burst into song," said his daughter Carole May.

"He taught all his children to sing." Mr. Smith was also an active member of St Mary Magdalen Cath- rale- olic Church in Hazel Park and was a mentor to reading students in the Hazel Park School District. But perhaps his favorite activity was being with his family, which included 11 children and 42 grandchildren. "When we were small, we used to go every year to the Thanksgiving Day parade. But when the family grew so large, we rented a huge bus and would meet at a predetermined location and drive to the parade," said his daughter.

"He would be in his glory there." Other survivors include daughters Alice Mastin, Doris Jurkiewicz, Mary Lou Wirth, Lucie Gordinier, Mary Jo Grech and Julie Trombley; sons Edward, Jack, Carlton Thomas, Anthony and Patrick; seven great-grandchildren, and two brothers. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today at Spaulding and Curtin Funeral Directors, 500 W. Nine Mile in Ferndale. The funeral will be at 10 a.m.

Tuesday at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 50 E. Annabelle. Burial will follow in Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak. "He gave himself at any time under any conditions.

No phone call was too late and no case was too mundane. His story was one of hope," said his wife. A typical case was his reaching out to the man with the failing liver and kidneys living in the trailer park, getting him into hospitals more than once until, to Mr. Bagno's sadness, the man one day vanished. His influence also reached into more evangelical spheres.

"He gave me good example," said the Rev. Joseph Tobin, superior general of the Redemptorist Congregation of Catholic priests, speaking from Rome. "It was the example of reaching out to somebody. It was the listening. More than one person would tell you that Bob Bagno listened to them and made them feel important.

There was something of the St Francis in him." In that case, he was a St Francis who liked to cook spaghetti, lin-guini, tortellini, polenta with gorgon-zola, gnocchi, spinach and ricotta, all troves from a Tuscan trattoria's treasure chest Raised in a household of seven children, he liked family and friends around the kitchen in his Grosse Pointe home. He dealt out plates as artistically arranged as those on a color page in a gourmet magazine. Robert Joseph Bagno was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1943, and was raised in his Canadian-born mother's family home in North Bay, Ontario. He attended Ohio's Bowling Green State University on an athletic schol How to submit obituaries and death notices By Lawrence deVine Free Press Staff Writer The couple were walking back to their Mackinac Island hotel, hand in hand, after a late dinner for two, enjoying the rain, and marveling at how their lives seemed to grow more blessed day by day. Then his hand in hers suddenly went limp and he dropped to the wet grass.

Robert J. Bagno, a charismatic man whose dual vocations in middle age became marketing Italian food and coming to the aid of friends in need, died of heart failure just before midnight Friday. His wife, Anne Donnelly Warren Bagno, said he had accompanied her to a legal seminar on the island. He was 55. Mr.

Bagno knew a wide viva A Robert Bagno and unusual circle of people, ranging from Edsel Ford II to the worldwide head of the Catholic Redemptorist order of priests, media and advertising representatives, the late J.P. McCarthy, grocers such as the east side Giglio family, and the desperate alcoholic dwindling away in a mobile home on blocks near the Detroit River. At his death, Mr. Bagno wa-5 vice president of a pasta speciality firm, Ecco D'Oro Food Corp. in War -en, a company he helped found the past year that was starting to prosper.

He joined the company and brought in his own product, a pasta meal in a box called Spaghetti Co. He developed the pasta product during an unplanned three-year stay in Rome in the early 1990s, a period that he later likened to a spiritual retreat While in Rome, he also developed a desire to work with substance abusers in 12-step programs. This became a serious, recuperative part of his life. Needful people who had gotten his name from others depended upon his willingness to help. Janina Bazan Polish traditionalist Janina Bazan, 71, of Shelby Township, a Polish immigrant who clung to her traditions despite disease and exile, died Saturday of complications from leukemia at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit She was born Janina Kusowska in Kamien Korszerski, Poland.

At the age of 15, the Nazis took her from her family and put her in a labor camp. After World War II, she and her husband went to Brazil, unable to get into the United States. There, she battled and overcame tuberculosis. In Brazil, she maintained her Polish heri- Janina Bazan tage. "One of the Polish meals are pier-ogies.

Normally, pierogies are filled with potatoes or cheese," said her daughter Irene Waller. "But in Brazil, sometimes they were not available or were expensive. So she would use bananas, which there were a lot of. In fact we still make them all the time and my sister loves them."
