The color still bleeds rinsing many times. -Lorraine Hines, Auburn, Ind. Dear Reader: According to International Fabricare Institute, garments that aren't col- 'orfast when bought can't be made colorfast.

The only way a garment can be colorfast is if the manufacturer goes several steps further in the dyeing process, and this could take more time and more money. Soaking the garment in vinegar Heloise Household Hints and salt to lessen the tendency of the dyes in the garment to spread has been a Heloise reader hint for years. Though the above method won't actually keep the dyes from bleeding, it might slow the process down. 24 East Logansport 722-2830 Asprin Will Not Prevent First Heart Attack Dear Dr. Lamb: There have been so many different recommendations about the use of aspirin for heart disease that it is difficult to know what to do. Who are the best candidates to take aspirin to prevent heart attacks those with one or more risk factors who have not been diagnosed as having any heart disease or those who have already suffered some heart ailment? What is the optimum dosage? Some sources indicate the use of one or more 5-grain (325 mg) aspirin a day, but a foreign researcher reported some months ago that only 10 percent as large a dosage was equally effective. If 10 percent is now accepted, would three 1.25 grain (81 mg) children's aspirin per week be appropriate? Dear Reader: Those are all important questions. Initially it was determined that individuals who had already sustained a heart attack would have a significant decrease in the risk of a second heart attack if they took aspirin regularly.

Then it was observed that in patients with "pre-infarction angina," an impending heart attack, who took aspirin, the actual heart attack could frequently be forestalled. None of these studies suggested that you could take aspirin to prevent a first heart attack. But a long-term study of 22,071 male physicians did establish that the risk of heart attacks could be decreased by 50 percent if this group took one 325 mg aspirin tablet every other day. Since the study was limited to a rather healthy group of men, the conclusions have to be limited. Results may be better or worse in a less healthy population of men or in women.

Dr. Lamb Medicine There was no difference in the risk of a heart attack in those men who were under 50 years of age, but in the 50-and-over age group, regardless of risk factors, that amount of aspirin did decrease the rate of heart attacks 50 percent. I do believe there is little point in taking more than one 325 mg aspirin tablet a day to prevent a first heart attack. I think it is too early to comment on the really small doses of aspirin and how effective that is. Additional studies to confirm the reports will be necessary.

But considering the role of aspirin in preventing the first heart attack, by preventing blood clotting, I would suspect, but cannot prove, that one 81 mg child's aspirin a day will prove to be effective. Aspirin simply helps to prevent the formation of a clot in the coronary arteries. That is how over 80 percent of heart attacks that result in heart muscle damage (myocardial infarctionhstart. But a lot of people die, without muscle damage, from a fatal irregularity of the heart. That is because of the build up of fatty-cholesterol deposits in the walls of the coronary arteries.

It is important to realize that aspirin will not prevent fatty-cholesterol deposits. That is why it is essential to follow the proper diet, exercise, don't smoke and reduce the various risk factors that cause such deposits. It is likely that the best program is to do both, take measures to decrease the risk factors and also a small dose of aspirin to prevent blood clotting. a Dr. Lamb welcomes letters from readers with health questions.
