Three WCKL Teams Still in Contention Heading into the final night of play, three teams are in contention for at least a share of the 1967-68 West Central Kansas League cage title. Contenders are Garden City, Hays High, and Lamed. Best that Garden City can hope for is half the title. Hays and Lamed, however, can possibly win the undisputed title. Garden and Hays have'never von even a share of the title in the past eight seasons.

That is the span of time that Garden has belonged to the WCKL. Ironic is the fact that Garden City has never won even a share of the conference for the Buffaloes have won even-greater honors in recent years. Garden has captured the Class AA regional championship the past two seasons. The Fi.no! Loop Gomes Here's the Situation Here's tihe situation on Friday's two final West Central Kansas League games. Garden City plays at Great Bend, while Hays High is at Larned.

If Great Bend defeats Garden City, the winner of the Larned-Hays game is undisputed WCKL king for the season. II' Garden City beats Great Garden shares the WCKL title with the Larned-Hays winner. Yet, each season, the WCKL crown escaped them.

Great Bend won it each time. The WCKL formerly.was composed of six teams. Garden became the seventh member when the conference expanded. Garden's first season as a basketball member was the 1959-60 season. One new record will be set Friday night, no matter who wins the crown.

The champion will have four league defeats- first time a WCKL kingpin has ever had so many conference setbacks. Great Bend has won the title three of the past four seasons. But the Panthers lost their two most-recent league games and now have no chance at even a share of the title. Lamed, like Great Bend, has won or shared the title three times since Garden joined the league. The Indians could win a fourth crown Friday night West Central Kansas League basketball champions (and their league records) since Garden City joined the conference: with 11 conference wins and 0 losses.

A large turnout of Hutch fans is expected to follow the Blue Dragons here. It's the regular-season finale for Hutch, too and the potent Dragons have extra incentive, too.

They will be shooting for an all-time school record of 18 consecutive basketball victories. Hutch brings an overall 18-1 record into the game. The Garden City Juco's cagers continue to dominate free- throw accuracy honors for the "2-member Jayhawk Juco Conference. Three Broncbusters are among the top 10 free throwers in the latest statistics chart. Archie Gooden, 6-4 soph, is the league leader with an 85 per cent completion figure.

He has converted 110 of 129 at- temp'ts, missing just 19 throws. The figures are for 19 games, and do not include the latest two contests. One reason for the deportation was that they did not have iden- ity papers, which is the same reason Rhodesia refuses them entry. A government spokesman said hare the men claimed to be EUiodesians and it was up to them to convince the Rhodesian authorities of this. Rhodesian border officials believe the men may be connected with African nationalist groups.

The men are reported in bad shaoe due to lack of shelter and food. Richest thoroughbred races Europe are for 3-year-olds. In America the 2-year-olds have biggest purses. Petti M.D. NCRMALW IN EAPW A T0 HAVE Htalth CapsuUs givti htlpful informilten, is not to of diignottic By JIM VAN VALKENBURG Associated Press Sports Writer "If only we could get Chuck Williams and Pat Frink both scoring well the same game, we would blow somebody out," Coach Sox Walseth used to say wistfully while his team struggled in last place in Big Eight basketball. It happened Wednesday night at Boulder, Colo. Williams threw in a career high of 38 points, Frink scored 18 and Walseth's club beat Iowa State 91-76, ruining Iowa State's bid to tie Kansas State for the lead. K-State at 8-3 now is the only team with three losses, which means the Wildcats can win it all without any help from anyone, by winning the last three games.

Nebraska is 8-4, Kansas and Iowa State both 7-4. Hutch High Coach Quits HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Doyle Schick, Hutchinson high school football coach for two years, announced Wednesday night he is resigning at the end of the school year. Schick, 28, is a former University of Kansas football star. He played fullback in the 1960 backfield that featured John Hadl at quarterback, Bert Coan and Curtis McCJinton at halfbacks.

Hadl, Coan and McClinton are top-ranked backs in professional football. Schkfc played for the Washington Redskins before entering the high" school coaching ranks. He coached at Rosedale High School, Kansas City, in the 1965 season, with' a 6-3 record and an Eastern Kansas League championship. He moved to Hutchinson in 1966 and coached that school to its first Ark Valley League championship in 21 years with 7-2 record. Schick's 1967 team had a 2-7 record.

Schick said his plans are indefinite but that he is thinking about returning to school and working on his master's degree. Nebraska hasn't won or shared a league 'championship since 1950 and Iowa State hasn't taken a crown since 1945. One of them is almost certain to be eliminated when they meet Friday night in Lincoln, Neb. The 56-point salvo by Williams and Frink far surpassed anything they had done in their first ia league games. Williams hit 14 of 18 field shots and all 10 at the line.

When Williams hit 27 "against Missouri, Frink had only 7. Frink had 32 against Kansas, but Williams only 9. Another big factor was the solid pivot play of 6-6 Kermit McMurry. He scored 11, on the heels of a 19-point job in a 75-73 upset of'Nebraska last Saturday. That's 30 points in two games, compared to a 4.9 season average prior to that.

Iowa State wasn't an easy victim. The Cyclones hit 15 of their first 17 field shots and finished with 50 per cent to 46.3 for the Buffs, who went in front to stay 56-55 with 16:19 left. College Scores Also vital was Colorado's 4136 rebound edge against a taller Iowa State front line. Don Smith and Bill Cam. Iowa State's big 1-2 punch, was held to 30 points, 14.2 under their league average.

The 6-9 Smith had 17, but seems certain to win the Big Eight scoring crown. He has a 24.4 average, Nebraska's Stu Lantz 20.2, with defending champ Don Sidle of Oklahoma third with 19.5. Other scoring leaders are Tom Baack of Nebraska at 18.6, Cain 18.5, Williams 18.0. Frink 17.3, Gene Jones of Missouri 17.1, Don Tomlinson of Missou ri 16.8. Jo Jo White of Kansas 16.3, Rodger Bobnenstiehl Kansas 15.4, Tom Johnson of Missouri 15.3 and Steve Honey cutt of K-State 14.8.

1 Saturday's schedule shows Colorado, 3-9, at K-State in the weakly afternoon TV game; Kansas at Oklahoma State, 3-8 and Missouri, 3-8, at Oklahoma, 6-5.
