Monday, September 99, 1932 EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Crosstown By Roland Co Editorial Correspondence UU t. Ul I Si I i I I i New York City, N.Y., Sept. 24 We agree with Governor Stevenson on many things none more than that this presidential campaign would be unbearable if It could not be taken with a smile. We don't mean a donkey "haw-haw." We don't mean certain issues are not of real gravity and should not be taken with the utmost ceriousness. We DO mean a sense of humor is most desirable to get one through this "silly season" with anything resembling dignity and self-respect.

We think It most fortunate for Governor Stevenson, and for his party, that he has this "saving grace of humor." We fear he would be one the campaign if he did not have The recent "Horse Opera" put ents Messrs. Eisenhower and Nixon over TV must be particularly amusing. In a sense, say the church officials, it is our oldest Bible. Certainly it is our most accurate.

The books of the Bible were first transcribed in ancient Hebrew, leaving the way open for many mistakes. It was a language without vowels the reader was supposed to interpolate his own vowels and this gave rise to many possible differences in interpretation. Such obsolete endings as "est" and "eth," of "thou" and "thee" except in prayer addressed to God, and such terms as "hoklen," "haply," "privily," "aforetime," and "begat," have been abolished as factories and stores. Peace on earth, good will toward men, for example. But for communism there would be MORE peace on earth and vastly more good will toward men. A FORMER Illinois state purchasing agent is quoted in Chicago as saying Governor Stevenson announced In 1950 that he would set up a special political fund. The statement is attributed to a Peoria banker and business man, David H. Cummings, who is quoted as saying: "I told Stevenson I saw nothing wrong with his plan, and I don't now." Neither do sir.

The present big type headlines, emphasize that opinion. Senator Nixon has rendered a great service to our nation by persistently preventing our government officials from harboring, defending, and protecting, subversive elements, pledged to overthrow our government by force.

Safely nested and protected by two Democratic presidents, two supreme court judges, and the present democratic candidate for president, all rushing to the defense of an accused criminal liar and communist. Senator Nixon took the great risk of being unpopular ard if he had- failed in convicting the criminal, would be charged with McCarthyism. The present head line charges to besmirch his character, if properly analyzed, would In reality commend him, and should have been properly considered before reporting. These news hounds and some ra dio commentators consider only the sensation they can create and the great honor of reporting a scoop. The department says that farm Income will be smaller this year than last, largely because of HIGHER PRODUCTION COSTS. It adds that in the broad Midwestern corn livestock area weaknesses in producer prices of hogs and cattle are beginning to show up.

THAT Is to say: With the COST of what he has to buy rising faster than the PRICE of what he has to sell, inflation is beginning to bite the farmer. It will bite all of us sooner or later If it isn't stopped. CYNICAL note: Nothing will be done about inflation until after election for until that end-of-the-world date everybody who COULD do something to stop inflation will want to maintain the Illusion that we never had it so good. UP IN Canada, nearly a half ton of gold (valued at about a third of a million dollars) has apparently vanished In transit between Toronto and Montreal. The gold was contained in ten boxes which were parked In an unguarded cargo shed while awaiting shipment by air.

Only four of the boxes arrived In Montreal. It appears likely that somewhere along the line somebody snitched six of them. SUPPOSE Canada still has some use for gold, and therefore the disappearance of a half ton ot it is cause for regret up there. But, if It had happened In the USA one might wonder. Except for filling teeth and a few minor uses, gold isn't good for much in present-day America.

You can't convert your paper money into It. In fact, you aren't even allowed to OWN it except for tooth-filling and certain other industrial uses, and even then you must have a government license to possess it. Gold's other historic function the settlement of international debts is out so far as we are concerned, for evervbodv in the world OWES US MONEY and as of now we have no debts abroad. So we have no use for our gold for that purpose. It's a screwball world, Isn't It? TACK to politix: Secretary of Agriculture Brannan is campaigning in Oregon for Stevenson, and he said In Albany the other night that Rich-ard Nixon's national broadcast In defense of his expense fund was "an emotional appeal and a good lawyer's defense of his case." But he mentioned Nixon's use of more than $4,000 of the funds for Christmas cards and recalled that Nixon said he used the fund to help fight Communism.

He then added: "How can we say we arc fighting communism with Christmas cards?" in the history of the publishing industry with 925,000 volumes rolling off the presses in three printing plants.
