Either of these conditions, according to the grand plan of "Poke-mon," is sufficient to render me incapable of understanding anything about it. Which makes any complaint I might voice the ravings of a ninny. Even so, I am going to proceed as if I catch the drift. Because I think I do. I feel comfortable that I grasp the "Pokemon" premise.

The computer game, trading cards and cartoon series' story line hinge on capturing exotic wild creatures, or Pokemon (pronounced PO-kay-mon). Then these pets are trained to mix it up with other trainers' Pokemon, with glory accruing to the winner. TV Guide has likened it to sci-fi cockfighting. "Pokemon" makes the mission seem a bit more ennobling: The trainer strives to become a "master," a sort of combination Eagle Scout, black belt and straight-A student. So what's to hate? Let's consider the TV series, which Kids' WB! imported from its native Japan in February.

It now airs six days a week, locally at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 and 10 a.m. Saturdays on WDWB-TV (Channel 20). I hate the cartoons' cut-rate look.

The animation is charmless, mechanical and oddly, since this is an action show rather inanimate. I understand that "Pokemon" exemplifies a style of animation called "anime." Presumably, that doesn't give it license to look crummy. But why waste time carping over production values when the larger values of the whole "Pokemon" bonanza have been set in motion with such virtuosity? What "Pokemon" sells so well (and the key word here is is adventure, camaraderie and competition where money rules. Note this excerpt from a recent press release: "Poke-mania has reached a frenzied pitch as millions of kids tune in to the smash-hit series, sing the tunes, play the video games and the trading card game, as well as collect an unlimited selection of 'Pokemon' merchandise." Not necessarily in that order, of course. The come-on that "Pokemon" uses is nothing new.

More than 40 years ago, being "in" for a boy was certified (at least, for a moment) by possession of a Davy Crockett coonskin cap. "Pokemon" sells the same sense of status and community just better, and on more fronts, than any kids-directed media property did before. That's the extent of his "Pokemon" involvement- And despite a forecast that one in five toys given to children this holiday season will be based on "Pokemon," my son's Christmas wishes point elsewhere.

I like to think that he, having struck a nice balance between indifference and devotion, comfortably "talks 'Pokemon' in his kindergarten circles in the same way an adult might assimilate sufficient sports knowledge to be able to chat about it socially, but without wasting untold hours watching all the games. How does anyone, even with a father as cranky as I am, resist the message on which the whole "Pokemon" craze has traded so persuasively? Better than ever before in pop culture, "Pokemon" slaps a brand name on accomplishment, courage and membership and promises a dose of these values with each "Pokemon" purchase. Let's take a look at Ash Ketchum, the valiant little boy in "Pokemon" whose quest is to catch all 150-and-growing Pokemon. Every member of the audience is challenged (or would cajoled be a better word?) to catch them, too: to buy the wares. Meanwhile, the cartoon's theme song rallies its clientele.

"I want to be the very best, like no one ever was," booms the righteous vocal over a rocking beat. "Pokemon! Gotta catch 'em all! I know it's my destiny!" That's the "Pokemon" credo, and its meaning is indisputable: To be a member, you've got to pay the club dues. "Pokemon are not just tools for fighting or a way of making money," Ash indignantly told a bad guy on an episode last week. Oh, no? Far more adeptly than innumerable other strategies for socializing kids into consumers, "Pokemon" gives youngsters a vivid preview of their future as adults. In adulthood, mastery means catching them all even when you have to put it on a charge card.

Before "Pokemon" is through, kids will know that's their destiny.
