the same year Amy Tan's older brother died of the illness. Daisy Tan then took Amy and her surviving brother to Switzerland, where Amy finished high school. The family returned to California in 1969. Walter Ford Navy officer, early CIA chief Retired Rear Adm. Walter Chilcott Ford, a destroyer commander in World War II and executive director of the newborn CIA in the later 1940s, died Saturday.

He lived in Annapolis and would have turned 96 on Friday. Mr. Ford spent 40 years in the Navy and the Maritime Administration. After he retired in 1961, he was a maritime consultant and corporate director. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr.

Ford graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1925. He became a captain after the United States entered the war. In 1947, Congress decreed the transformation of the Office of Strategic Services into the CIA. Mr.

Ford was its executive director until 1949. Daisy Tan Inspiration for novelist Daisy Tan, mother of "The Joy Luck Club" author Amy Tan, died of complications of Alzheimer's disease Monday in her San Francisco home. She was 83. Daisy Tan's life was also the basis for her daughter's 1991 novel "The Kitchen God's Wife," the story' of a Chinese woman who left an abusive husband and came to the United States from Shanghai in 1949. Amy Tan often credits her mother for inspiring her to switch from freelance business writing to novel writing.

"My mother said to me about 20 years ago, during a moment when we weren't getting along well, 'If I die, what will you she recalled Tuesday. "The questions she had, the fact she never felt that anything was impossible what's in all of my books is the quality of hope that she had in her life." Daisy Tan married Baptist minister John Tan when she arrived in the United States. He died of a brain tumor in 1968, I Every Tuesday. Smith said, her father was working on convincing the state to provide financial assistance to families who care for relatives who are children, essentially providing the same assistance given to foster parents. Dorothy Harper Jones, a friend and colleague, said Mr.

Little's death "was really a loss for the social work community as well as the black community." "He was very much an advocate for those who were not being given access to the things that they were entitled to," she said. Jones said he had a good sense of humor, but his passion for social work was evident in his teaching style. Little-Smith said her father was also an inspiration to his children. "He was strong, he was dependable, he always had a pearl of wisdom to share," she said, adding that he was also stubborn. "That's what made him the great person that he was," she said, adding that nothing would "deter him from what his objective was." Among his most valuable lessons, Little-Smith said, was to "not let the whims of the majority keep you from what you believe in your heart." Survivors also include his wife of 39 years, Patricia; a daughter, Sheryl Little-Fletcher; a son, Pierre Summers; seven grandchildren; two sisters, and two brothers.

His son-in-law is state Sen. Virgil Smith, D-Detroit. Plans for a memorial service are pending. M.L. ELRICK can be reached at S13-223-4456 or elrickfreepress.com.
