Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Monday, May 29,1995 (219) Ext 144 To Parents By LAURA MYERS Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) Many kids ages 10-13 are frightened about their lives and their futures, according to an advocacy group that says children view their parents as loving but inept when it comes to solving problems. "I'm scared of being killed," says 10-year-old Janelle. "I don't want to get raped, but that happens to everyone," says 11- year-old Barbara. Then there's David: "If 1 get kidnapped, I probably won't see my parents again." As a group, children ages 10 through 13 think they're more likely to die or be abused than to start smoking or drinking, according to a recently released study released. The survey by KidsPeace, an advocacy group for children and families in crisis, found that youngsters still look to parents for advice, but the study suggests that most parents are ill-equipped to deal with problems confronting children.

"Most parents want to be good parents, but they don't know where to turn when there's a crisis," KidsPeace spokesman Mark Stubis said at a Capitol Hill news conference. "The kids are really scared and confused out there." In releasing the survey that quot- some children, KidsPeace launched a program to train parents to help kids deal with fears and problems, and they named talk show host Gibbons as the national spokeswoman for the effort. The KidsPeace program includes a television and radio information campaign and "SafetyNet," an Internet computer service that offers advice "seven standards for effective parenting" and "15 ways to help your kids through crisis." Asthmatic Children Can Participate In Sports ByDB.DAf«lELZAPSaff TO Medical Center For AP Special Features Children and young adults with exercise- induced asthma have often been kept away from physical activity, but with proper care and treatment there is no reason most can't partici- in sports. Asthma is a chronic lung disease typified by airway inflammation, with episodic tightening of the airways, known as bronchospasms. Asthma attacks can be caused by a variety of factors within the environment, including dust and pollutants. In some cases, exercise may be the only trigger for an asthma attack, a condition known as exercise-induced asthma. Symptoms can include chest pain or tightness, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and' endurance problems.

Proper treatment of this condition depends on communication among doctors, parents and athletes. Physicians, for example, should be informed immediately of a patient's symptoms. Those athletes who require treatment for exercise-induced asthma often find that inhaled beta-2 agonists, such as albuterol, are most effective. These medications are used 5 minutes to 15 minutes before exercise and may be repeated if necessary after two hours of intense exercise. Beta-2 agonists work by relaxing the muscle around the airway, which in turn decreases the spasm and eliminates symptoms.

1 Cromolyn sodium is generally used for treatment of chronic asthma, but it can also be used sporadically to prevent exercise-induced asthma. If cromolyn is being used for the prevention of exercise-induced asthma, it should be taken about 30 minutes before competition. Cromolyn can be used as a substitute for beta-2 agonists. In some people, however, both medications are required for the desired results. In some cases, symptoms of the condition peak within the first 15 minutes of exercise and will resolve themselves if athletes can continue to exercise.

Regardless of the sport selected, athletes should undertake a vigorous warm-up of 15 to 30 minutes before competition. Coaches and teachers also should be alert to symptoms of exercise-induced asthma to ensure that young athletes receive proper treatment, Because symptoms can worsen rapidly, young athletes with moderate or severe symptoms should not travel home alone or remain alone in an empty house after exercise. 4 Dr. Daniel Zapson is director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at New York University Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases, Classified Advertising is so handy all you do is call!
