The A's, who are IV2 games behind the Blue Jays and two behind the Red Sox, play two more games in Toronto and then four in Boston.

Roy Halladay (8-5) started in place of David Wells, who began suffering back stiffness Thursday and is day-to-day. Halladay loaded the bases with two out in the fifth, and Paul Spoljaric yielded Stairs' second grand slam of the season, giving Oakland a 7-3 lead. Each team hit four homers. "We always say if you want to slug, we can slug. It was sweet," Stairs said.

"We were the last men standing." Stairs, who went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, gave Oakland an 8-5 lead in the seventh with his 29th homer. Chicago 4-7, Texas 2-4: Ray Durham hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the host White Sox completed a sweep that cut the Rangers' West lead to games over Oakland. Right-hander Kip Wells, called up from Double-A Birmingham, won the opener for his second victory in two major league starts, overcoming a 56-minute rain delay in the top of the third and yielding one run on three hits in five innings. Wells, 22, was sent back to Birmingham after the game. He won his major league debut Aug.

The Reds had tied it in the sixth on two-out doubles from Pokey Reese and pinch-hitter Hal Morris off Paul Byrd, who had been scratched from his last start because of back spasms. The Phillies stranded 1 1 seven of them by Doug Glanville, who hit into a force-out with the bases loaded in the second, grounded out with runners on second and third in the sixth, and struck out with runners at first and third in the eighth. Mike Lieberthal fanned on three pitches from Scott Williamson (1 1 -5) with runners at second and third in the ninth. Pittsburgh 6, Houston 5 (13 innings): Brian Giles walked and scored the po-ahead run at Houston on errors from third baseman Bill Spiers and second baseman Craig Biggio (covering first on a bunt).

Joe Oliver followed with a sacrifice fly. The Astros made four errors and lost their fourth straight. Mike Williams allowed Carl Everett's homer and walked two before getting the save. Giles hit his 25th homer. Atlanta 7, Los Angeles 3: Chipper Jones hit two homers worth three RBIs, and Kevin Millwood (13-7) allowed two runs on three hits in eight innings and fanned nine for the visiting Braves.

Montreal 14-8, Colorado 13-6 (first game, 10 Innings): Rondell White homered on the nightcap's first pitch, giving him one in each game, and Vladimir Guerrero added a two-run shot lor a 6-2 lead in the fifth as the visiting Expos completed a sweep. Guerrero's 27th homer extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

James Mouton scored on first baseman's Todd Helton two-out error in the 10th as the Expos won the opener despite having blown leads of 6-1, 12-6 and 13-11. The Rockies tied the game in the ninth on Neifi Perez's RBI double but then left the potential winning run on third with none out. Milwaukee 3, Arizona 1: Hideo Nomo (10-5), who had lost his past three starts, allowed four hits in 6 innings as the visiting Brewers won interim manager Jim Lefebvre's debut and broke the Diamondbacks' five-game winning streak. Nomo struck out four and walked four. 7 0 4 3 1 7 ST.

LOUIS Mark McGwire hit his 45th and 46th home runs, moving three ahead of Sammy Sosa for the major league lead, and Kent Bottenfield earned his 16th win in the St. Louis Cardinals' 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. The game matched the top two home run hitters in the majors for the first time since the Cardinals visited Wrigley Field on May 28-30. Sosa, whose 66 homers last season were four behind McGwire's record-setting 70, went 0-for-2 with two walks and two strikeouts. "There's no home run race," McGwire said.

"You don't play for a home run race. The only reason a player puts on a uniform is to win a title. It's a media thing. I was in a home run derby three or four years with Ken Griffey in the American League and no one said anything about it. What's the big deal?" McGwire (3-for-4) had five RBIs, giving him a league-leading 107.

He has 503 career homers, one behind Eddie Murray for 15th place. McGwire hit a two-run homer off Kyle Farnsworth (2-6) in the third and a two-run shot off Rod Beck in the eighth. J. D. Drew and Fernando Tatis hit solos off Farnsworth.

Bottenfield (16-5), who tied Houston's Mike Hampton for the league lead in victories, allowed one run on five hits in 6 innings. KL STREAKS 5' In what might be the first positive sign in a while tt, manager Larry Parrish, Tigers officials haven't a quick move to hire Phil Garner to replace him. 41lNo team has contacted me yet," Garner said JViday, the day after the Milwaukee Brewers fired bin as manager. jPI didn't expect anybody would. As far as I know, everybody has a manager, and I think everybody is oing a pretty good job." Gamer said he didn't plan to call any clubs.

"I'm going to solicit anybody's job," he said in a telephone interview. "I'm not going to do that." I Garner, 50, is the veteran, energetic kind of man-5ger the Tigers are expected to seek if they don't retain Parrish. Garner had a 563-617 record in eight Seasons in Milwaukee, and he was working on his jjeventh straight losing season when he was let go. 4 However, many of Garner's clubs had few if any pars. During his tenure, the Brewers generally had goor drafts and made few effective trades.

And with phe of the game's lowest payrolls, the small-market ewers couldn't try to buy a pennant. think I will get an opportunity to manage I 9rMd like to do that," said Garner, who remains jpdely respected for his intelligence and leadership, jji Garner said he hadn't thought about what conditions such as a club with an upper-echelon payroll he would prefer in his next managing job. "It's like I tell the players when they talk about prtades and contracts: 'Focus on what you've got to go dji today, and all of that will take care of itself. There srjll be plenty of time to worry about that other Garner said. "I have enough trouble doing a dtlity lineup.

The Tigers' three-run first meant Borkowski has pitched with a lead in every game he has started. "We've got a pretty good idea of what our bullpen is going to look like next year," Parrish said. "What we have to figure out is our starters." Ausmus leading off "because he'll take a pitch and work the count," Parrish said helped the Tigers to a 3-1 lead.

After he drew a full-count walk and went to second on Cruz's single, Encarnacion was hit by a pitch. Palmer lined out, but Clark's single to left tied the game. The go-ahead run scored on a force-out, and another scored when second baseman Jeff Huson threw away the relay to first. Troy Glaus homered in the second, and the Angels tied it in the fourth on Tim Salmon's leadoff single and Jim Edmonds' triple to deep center. Borkowski stranded the potential go-ahead run, though, striking out Todd Greene and Glaus and getting Huson to bounce to second.
