2B IE PR OAKLAND FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1999 OAKLAND COUNTY Your Free Time A WEEKLY LOOK AT OAKLAND COUNTY ENTERTAINMENT -t 1 i Roeper kids, pros toss a 'Tempest' The Roeper School's theater company has created a special effects treat with their production of Shakepeare's final work, "The Tempest." Dean Acheson, Roeper's drama teacher, has gone to great lengths to get what he needs on stage including having two yards of sand delivered. Some sequences were filmed underwater at a local pool; the audience will see them projected on sail cloth. Sharing their talents with the students are two professionals from local theater companies. Mary Locker of Detroit plays the magician Prospero and Annette DePetris of Ferndale is Queen Alfonso. Most other parts are shared by two students who alternate shows.

Prospero, having lost his dukedom to his brother Antonio (Alison Rogers and Sarah Ashcraft), is set adrift in a rotten boat with his child Miranda (Jessica Franz and Sonja Lipp-mann). They reach an island inhabited by the spirit Ariel (performed by seven students taking on various forms) and Caliban (Brian Eshchach and Charley Marcuse). When there's a shipwreck, Prospero plots his revenge. The cast includes Ferdinand (Johnny O'Green and Matt Glazek), Sebastian (Natalie Knazik and Abby Ziaja), Gonzalo (Mimsy Sherry and Anna Vitale), Adrian (Kelli Rademacher and Jen Floyd) Roeper students John O'Green and Hope Williams in "The Tempest." and Francisco (Leah Morabito and Zoe Stein). Shows are 8 p.m.

tonight, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 8 p.m. May 14 (with afterglow), 3 and 8 p.m. May 15 and 3 p.m. May 16.

Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for non- students and $27.50 for dinner theater. Plays are performed at Roeper's Birmingham Campus on Adams, two blocks north of Maple. For tickets call 1-248-203-7933. By Nancy Chipman Powers, Your Turn staffer PONTIAC Deliberations proceed in 'Jenny Jones' suit Jurors will begin a second day of deliberations today over whether a national talk shew should be held responsible for the killing of a Michigan man four years ago. Thursday morning, the panel, in its first hour of deliberations, asked Oakland County Circuit Judge Gene Schnelz for additional information in the Amedure family's suit against the "Jenny Jones" talk show.

The jury wanted transcripts of testimony from Jenny Jones, two producers and Donna Riley, a friend of Amedure and Schmitz. Schnelz asked them to rely on memory, but to repeat their request if they disagree about a point. Jonathan Schmitz killed Scott Amedure three days after the two appeared for a taping of an episode on same-sex secret crushes. The Amedures blame the show, saying the staff ambushed an emotionally unstable Schmitz with the news of Amedure's affections. Schmitz faces a retrial in the slaying.

The show and its parent companies, Warner Bros, and Telepictures say the show had nothing to do with the killing. Eight of nine jurors have to agree to reach a verdict. By L.L. Brasicr RGYIL OAK Winds fell power lines, spark fires in 2 houses A light rainstorm carrying winds passed over Royal Oak in minutes Thursday afternoon, but it was enough to knock down a power line that touched off a fire in two homes. One of the gutted homes, in the 200 block of 13 Mile, belonged to Laura Bertalan, who was in East Lansing awaiting her graduation from Michigan State University today.

Both houses were unoccupied when the fire began about 4:40 p.m. firefighters were hampered by downed wires. By Brian Ballou SOUTHFIELD Manager candidates to be interviewed The City Council will begin publicly interviewing five finalists today for the city manager's job. Candidates will interview at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

and two will be questioned Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the basement of the Southfield Public Library, 26000 Evergreen Road. The candidates are: Stephen Iionczek, managing director of Reading, since 19. Donald Crawford, city manager of Streator, 111., since 1994.

Donald Gross, acting Southfield city manager since July 13. Gross was community development director for 32 years. Thomas 1 loover, city manager for Worcester, since 1994. Marc Ott, assistant to the mayor of Rochester Hills. By Marsha Low COUNTYWIDE Suspect in 3 Arbor Drug robberies wore smock A thief wearing an Arbor Drugs smock has stolen more than 70 cartons of cigarettes from three stores in the past week while puzzled employees watched, police said Thursday.

Descriptions of the woman and her bold tactic match those given by employees at Arbor stores in West Bloomfield Township, Troy and Clawson. She made off with 24 cartons from the store at Orchard Lake and Lone Pine roads about 4 p.m. on April 30; 40 cartons from the 14 Mile and Rochester Road store in Clawson on Sunday and 10 cartons from the Troy store at Big Beaver and Dequindre on Wednesday. Each time, the suspect came in wearing a blue Arbor smock, stuffed a black garbage bag full of cigarettes and fled in a gray or light blue Ford Tempo or Dodge Intrepid, police said. Anyone with information can call West Bloomfield Police at 1-248-682-9200; Troy Police at 1-248-524-3477 or Clawson Police at 1-248-435-5000 anytime.

By Brian Murphy I71RIVH.NCTON HILLS Death threat prompts lawyer to quit case The lawyer for a woman accused of hiring an undercover police operative to kill her son's father withdrew from the case this week because of death threats he allegedly received from one of his client's prison pen pals. Attorney Neil Rockind tald Oakland County Circuit Juflge Alice Gilbert that he could no longer represent Paula Kuchciak after his client read him a letter she received at the Oakland County Jail from an inmate at the State Prison of Southern Michigan at Jackson. Rockind, who was court-appointed, said the prisoner who made the threats is scheduled to be paroled soon. Kuchciak, 33, of Farmington Hills, is charged with solicitation to commit murder. Gilbert granted Rockind's request and rescheduled the hearing for Thursday.

By Brian Murphy PONTIAC Officials to auction recovered, surplus items Oakland County's annual auction of surplus equipment and recovered or stolen items begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the government complex on County Center Drive East, one mile south of Dixie Highway and V- miles north of M-59. Items must be bought with cash, cashier's check or certified funds. For more information, call 1-248-858-1015, anytime. FRANKLIN Lawsuit won't delay police station builders A lawsuit by the Franklin Historic District Study Committee and Commission will not prevent the city from starting construction on a new police station, to be located on a parcel of land that had been included in the historic district.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Fred Mester denied Wednesday a request made by the study committee and commission to delay construction. In March, the Village Council voted to strip the historical designation of a parcel of land next to Village Hall where the police station will be built. By Brian Ballou BRIEFLY: oxroRD township: James Burgess, 18, and Kareen Rowen, 17, both of Oxford, were arrested Wednesday on felony charges of making and passing counterfeit bills. Police also expect to charge a 14-year-old, who allegedly made the bills on a stolen computer. Police confiscated about $250 in bills at a residence and from area businesses.

The charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,500 fine.
