I thought this was porf but a good sign it? Leave wanting more as they say The first step ha's been taken ears have been opened curiosity piqued hope Kil Kare have enough vision to grab the prover bial gold ring and bring on home JOHN GRAHAM LTJ Bukern Earth Volume 2 (Good Looking CD) It would be a disservice to UK beat impresario LTJ Bukem to label his music something lame like so how about something really abstract like music for people who hate to (I mean really loads of folks out diere buying this but no one dancing: up with that?) sleek subde work has pre viously been made available on comps such as series as well as on projects mixing his own works with those of other noteworthy dance artists such as seminal Logical Progression collection which more or less put drum bass on the commer cial and critical map here in the States or those familiar with other releases this one will come as no surprise as his trademark template is in full effect: skittering juggling beats anchored to deep dub like bass pat terns with keyboards (Bukem loves the ender Rhodes) washing over the pro ceedings like waves and repeated bird like loops flying above The Earth series is slightly more influenced by downbeat acid jazz sounds than most current drum bass and as you move from artist to artist (all expertly mixed by Bukem) there a weak cut in the bunch Of partic ular note is an absolutely mesmerizing track with a on the ish keyboard wash opening the track like a sunrise merging with a disco beat to indelible effect or those of you who have written off the new electronic dance music as one huge record company cookie sale in the aftermath of think again This just some hyped up shit for the new millennium so get over it corey du browa The John Doe Thing or the Rest of Us (Kill Rock Stars CD EP) John Doe is a veritable renaissance man in the indie domain rom paving a legacy as a founding member of one of die most influential progressive bands to emerge from the Los Angeles punk scene of the early 1980s to steady work in art house films and a slew of post solo albums on indepen dent and major labels alike Doe is back with die stunning or the Rest of Us an EP on Kill Rock Stars or the Rest of Us is a five song release featuring Doe at his finest his punk rock roots and poetic genius in exemplary without forsaking the indie rock edge that fans of yore have come to expect Caustic yet reflective lyrics are delivered in signature style as smooth as a string of unbridled sonnets His vocals are full and tex tured while his expressive broodiness is unscathed The only drawback to or the Rast of Us is its brevity Clocking in at a sinful 20 minutes the album provides barely enough time to pique a rabid interest only to dash the moments of blitheness it amply musters even in such an abbreviated form Nonetheless Doe continues to demonstrate his propensi ty for intelligentsia punk meets in a frolic with roots as his music ages gracefully and slips effortlessly into die annals of music tina potterf The Deflowers in' (Square Target CD) The Deflowers get around This may not be apparent from standing next to them in the checkout line at Safeway but just listen to these song titles from their new album in I Please New The Deflowers chief song writers Chris Martin and Rob Mercer are always hooking up with bourbon swilling gals who among other rela tionship taboos practice inebriated dentistry go out on a limb and say this is a power pop concept album about failed love The clever tide plus lyrics such as gave the best of my loveMove on to another from New are ample proof 30 THE ROCKET March 25 April 8 1998 rV Av a 1 Ar1 I.
