Now found in well 'over half the homes in America, the remote control enables viewers not -only to zap commercials but also to flip instantly from one show to an I MAsiT GUNTHER other. Bored? Click. Offended? Click. Wonder what else is on? Click.

What's a network programmer to do? The other morning about 8 a.m. Saturday I sat in my hotel room and got an answer. Actually, It's a creation of David Lynch, the slightly twisted but very original film director who was responsible for the bizarre "Blue Velvet" of 1986 and the even more bizarre "Eraserhead." (That surreal 1978 cult movie, Lynch's feature film debut, is like living someone's nightmare.) Just the idea of Lynch making a TV show for ABC is mind-boggling, but that's another story. "Twin Peaks," which begins in March, is quite reminiscent of "Blue Velvet" in that it takes us into the lurid world that, in Lynch's view, lurks just beneath the surface of small-town America. The show stars Kyle MacLachlan, who worked with Lynch in "Blue Velvet" and "Dune," as a most unusual FBI agent assiped to investigate a murder in a logging town in the Pacific Northwest.

"Twin Peaks" is zap-proof. I can assure you of that because I saw the show without commercials and I found myself waiting for a break that never came to do one of the things we do during commercials. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for a minute. Why? Partly because the murder of a high school girl that opens the episode is so mysterious that it defies any obvious solution. For instance, why would a killer leave a tiny square of paper with the letter under his victim's fingernail? But the murder is just one of many mysteries that await discovery in "Twin Peaks." We meet them the way we meet real people, in bits and pieces. Who is that lady who seems to be obsessed with the drapes in her motor home? Why is that other woman carrying a log to the town meeting? The two-hour pilot episode hints at bitter feuds, illicit passion, dark and unsettling secrets and explains none of them. "Twin viewers from around the 'country.

Peaks" is constructed like a soap opera, to run for seven weeks. Lynch implied in an interview that it will take most of that time to unravel the story. "We're all detectives of sorts," he said, "and we want to know what's going to happen." He's right. I can't wait to see the next episode of "Twin Peaks." It's that good. None of which means that these two shows will necessarily succeed for ABC.

The "Home Videos" idea will run thin before too long, just as blooper shows did in the past. And "Twin Peaks" is so unusual that it's entirely possible some viewers won't get it. It's also so intricately plotted and densely populated there are 15 regular characters and another 20 supporting figures that viewers who miss the premiere may never catch up. Still, "Home Videos" and "Twin Peaks" are different enough to persuade even the most impatient zap-per to put down the remote control, if only for a while. submission if they want their videos back.

Mindless and empty as it may be, "America's Funniest Home Video" is pretty close to zap-proof television. Once a viewer has bought into the idea for the show, there's no reason to zap. Say you don't like the video of the housewife who got stuck inside her dishwasher while trying to fish out a fork. No problem. It'll be over in a moment, to be replaced by the 11-month-old baby lip-synching "New York, New York." If cute kids aren't your thing, here comes a guy who stuck a bunch of scorpions into his shirt to see what would happen.

The producers, in a sense, have already done the zapping by editing all the home videos into bite-sized pieces. Besides that, "America's Funniest Home Videos" is the ideal show for capturing zappers from other networks whb are scanning the dials. It doesn't take 10 seconds to figure out what this show's about. No plots, no characters. Jus! yuks.
