As line-blasting fullback and general backbone of the Montana team, Eso Naranche has earned the praise of coaches, rival players and fans with his brilliant work. With the end of the season at hand, Montana University offers a versatile 200-pound fullback as its nomination for what honors may come. A glance at Naranche's record of his senior grid season reveals why he is deserving of grid glory. Checked for two seasons by knee injuries, Eso Naianche was a forgotten man when this fall's practice started, but the undiscouraged Grizzly decided to give the game one more try. The husky Grizzly from Butte hit his stride early this year in a great comeback and has since led Montana in all departments. First, Montana was without its regular season captain who joined the air corps, but team mates appointed Naianche honorary game captain twice, other seniors getting this honor when Eso didn't. A p o w e i f u l runner and unusually fast for his weight, Naianche has scored 50 points and has been on the top of the Pacific Coast confeience scoring parade for three weeks and seems certain to win the race. Naranche has scored six touchdowns, kicked 11 conveisions and last week booted a 35-yaid field goal on a muddy field against Idaho. Statistics show that the Montanan ranks sixth in total offense in the conference. In 97 plays Naiauche has made 513 yards. He has passed 34 times in seven games, completed 13 for 270 yards for an average of 20 yards a flip. Kicking field goals, passing and plunging isn't enough so the big Grizzly calls signals, kicks off and backs up the line. Doug Fessenden, coach at Montana Uni- ·\eisity for seven years, calls Na- ranche the best fullback he has had. Montana followers think he is the most outstanding Grizzly back since Mad Milton Popovich galloped to national honors back in 1937. Montana has won six games this fall, with Eso Naranche instrumental in making the winning scores.
