DR S A ASHTON DEAD Virginia Physician Succumbs to Infantile Paralysis MEMBEK OF NOTED FAMILY Practitioner Suddenly Stricken at Colo nial Beach last Saturday and Brought tn Oarfield HnsDital Was Well Known i I Here and in His Native State The Funeral to Be Held Today ol Dr Stuart Arthur Ashton a member of an old and distinguished Virginia family one of tjpe best known physicians in the eastern part of the State health officer drector of the Westmoreland National Bank of Colonial Beach and a member of the Virginia State board of health died at Garfield Hospital yesterday morning morning of infantile paralysis Suddenly stricken at Colonial Beach on Sunday last Dr Ashton was brought to Wash ington on Monday night He was 25 years On Saturday evening last Dr Ashton complained of stiffness In the muscles of his back which made it impossible for him to bend downward Sunday morning he was unable to leave his bed A physician Was summoned and relatives at Colonial Beach communicated communicated with - a friend intht city who is a surgeon afld afkeid that hego - to Colonial Colonial Beaeh Monday imreplwora was sent to hiring - the young physlelan to Washington Heroic Measures Adopted Monday evening he arrived accom - panied by relatives The ambulance of Garfield Hospital took the stricken doctor doctor to that institution Dr Philip S Roy and Dr Tom A Williams were1 called and after a short examination they announced him to be suffering from - infantile paralysis In its most virulent form It became immediately immediately apparent to the physcians that heroic measures must be resorted to in order to save the life of the young man From Tuesday until late Thursday night the two doctors worked unceas ingly applying every known method of treatment Shortly before midnight it was clear that the case was hopeless and efforts of the physicians after that time were chiefly devoted to aTTTeviating the patients patients pain Both legs were absolutely paralyzed and before death the disease attacked his arms Relatives throughout the State of Vir glnia were notified and funeral arrangements arrangements completed In addition to regular church Services the Colonial Beach lodge or Masons will - hold special services at the grave The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3 oclock in old St Pauls EDlscoDal i Church in King George county Va The Kcv John McNabb of this Wry formerly rector of St Pauls will officiate Interment Interment will be in the family burying ground Born in King George County Born In King George county in 18S5 Dr Ashton was educated in the public schools of the county and later went to Richmond where he fcsgan the study of medicine After graduating he became a rnember of the staff of St Lukes Hos pital In that city and later was appointed appointed house surgeon He was the son of Lewis A Ashton and Mary Bond Howe Ashton of an old Virginia family which dated back to colonial times Dr Ashton was the great - great - grandsongrandson grandsongrandson of George Mason of Gunston the author of the celebrated Virginia bill of rigntsi dratted during Revolutionarv days Dr AshtonS parents are dead He leaves three brothers Lewis A Ashton and Dangerfield Lewis Ashton of King George county Dr Fielding Lewis Ashton a well - known Seattle surgeon surgeon and two sisters Mrs John Fitz hugh of King George county and Mrs F F Ninde of Colonial Beach
