Falling Beam Kills Worker ROANOKE (AP) — A Roan- okc man died Friday when a 1,800-pound steel beam fell 13 stories and hit him al Ihe construction construction side of the Richard H. Poff Federal Building here: Paul Payne Bowen, BO, was dead on arrival at a hospital. The beam landed on a pickup truck he was unloading and also struck him in the chest, police said. Bowen was an employe of Roanoke Iron & Bridge Works, Inc., and was delivering small slecl to the construction site, police said. The beam was knocked from its poskion on Ihe 13lh and Hth floors by the boom of a crane thai had just hoisted steel to the 13th floor, police said. As the boom was lowered, it struck the beam, shearing the bolts that held it in place, bounced away from the building building and apparently fell unhindered unhindered the rest of the way.
