Obituary : Michael Spellman "Uncle Mike"
SP1LMAW In -a' quiet spot near Sturgeon called the cemetery, consecrated by the citizens as a final resting place (or loved friends and kindred, kindred, reposr all that remains in this world of our departed friend, Michael Spelman, surrounded by the inanimate forms of those who in this life loved and honored him- We called him "Uncle Mike." Evrry child in town knew him and loved him. Every man who had formed his acquaintance admired his many manly qualities. : His life -has ended. He was the son of Dennis and Catharine Spelman and was born in Old Pallas Greene, county of Limerick, Ireland, on August 13, 1833. He came to America in March, 1850, and settled at Brooklyn, Brooklyn, N. Y., where his father died. In 1852 he moved to Peoria, 111,, and worked on a farm at £12 a month. He moved to St. Louis county from there. "He. came to Sturgeon in i«55 and worked on tlic Old North Missouri Missouri railroad. In 1857 he purchased purchased .40 acres of timbered land, the place on which he died De cember 23, 1904 He was married May 4, 1869, to Elvira R. Lyda. To this union ten children were born, four of whom survive — Dennis, Dennis, John, Samuel and Ora. Funeral services were conducted at the Catholic church in Sturgeon on Saturday, December 24, 1904, a large crowd attending. Michael Spelman got hss wishes. He wanted to die easy and he did. We never heard him speak an unkind word about his fellow man. Ho; was square in dealing with his fellowtnan and true to his convictions convictions of right and wrong. He accumulated considerable of this world's goods by his own efforts efforts and left his family in comfortable comfortable circumstances, His will was probated Monday by his two sons, Dennis and Samuel, Samuel, who will carry out the pro visions of his will, which we will print next week. — Sturgeon Leader.
