Norman Lessard Assault Charge
Driver Denies Assault Charge ; Norman Lessard, 41, of North Ferrisburg pleaded innocent in Ver-; Ver-; Tmont District Court Monday to a ' charge of aggravated assault for allegedly driving his car into a food ;tand and forcing a food vendor to jump to avoid serious injury. i Lessard allegedly drove his car rup the Church Street Marketplace at ; noontime Sunday, crashing through five metal barriers and a pretzel tstand before stopping in front of J.C. ; Penney's on Church Street. Three I'cars were struck during the incident Lwhich allegedly began after a minor ; traffic accident on Main Street. Pedestrians were forced to dive ; out of the way of the car which some : witnesses estimated was going more than 50 mph. Christopher Reed, the food vendor, suffered a cut hand and the food stand was demolished. Penrose Jackson, Church Street Marketplace director, estimated the damage to metal barriers at more than $1,000. She said she did not have plans to beef up the barriers, because, because, she said, the incident was unusual. "I'm sorry that anyone was hurt, but it could have been a lot worse," she said. The court ordered that Lessard undergo psychiatric evaluation at Vermont State Hospital in Water-bury. Water-bury. Water-bury. He was being held at Chittenden Chittenden Community Correctional Center in lieu of $2,500 bail Monday night.
