Turner is photographer of year L. Roger Turner, Wisconsin State Journal ehicf photographer was named "News Photographer of the Year" Sunday Sunday by the Wisconsin News Photographers Photographers Assn. The distinction is the first time a Madison photographer won the honor since 1967 when former State Journal photographer Norman Lenburg won the award. Judges awarded Turner 160 points after viewing a record 704 entries in 11 categories from 64 photographers-in the association's 25th annual competition. Richard C. Greenawalt of the Milwaukee Milwaukee Journal and Sentinel was runner-up with 120 points. Turner was first in the portrait and personality category with a photo of retired retired Archbishop of Canterbury Arthur Michael Ramsey; a second in the women's page category for a World War I veteran in uniform with his wife; and a second place in feature layout for photos of Ramsey. Turner has won numerous awards and Sunday's announcement naming him top photographer honors in a second state. He is a former Illinois News Photographer of the Year. Turner, of 2259 Fox Ave., joined The Wisconsin State Journal in 1966. He has been a news photographer since 1955 and . was with the Decatur (111.) Herald and Review and the Champaign-Urbana (III.) News-Gazette. Bruce Fritz of the Capital Times won a first place in pictorial, a second place in news layout and an honorable mention mention in feature layout. Mark Peristein, former State Journal photographer, earned a third place in sports picture layout. Last year's top photographer Erwin Gebhard, of the Milwaukee Journal and Sentinel, did not enter Ihis year. He won top photographer honors each year since 1968. t r.
