Luther Shoemaker, of Milan Town ship, Goes Home Drunk and Raises Cain In Jail. Luther Shoemaker, of Milan town ship, is doing a thirty - eight - day term in Jail for making a rough house at his home last Saturday. The judg ment was pronounced by Justice France this forenoon. Shoemaker is a farmer and n man of family, who is usually a. pretty good sort of a i el low. but when he gets under the in fluence of liquor he becomes a bad citizen end has before this been an object of penalty for violation of the law. His wife is an invalid, a suf ferer from, consumption, and has been taken caro of by her sister,. Mrs Brenner. Last Saturday Shoemaker went horn under the influence of liquor and was correspondingly ugly. One of his children, playing in the yard, attracted his attention and wrath and. he proceeded to chastise it. The mother went to the door and seeing that her husband w brutal in his treatment of the child, She interfered and was. knocked down for her Ta1ns. Mrs. Brenner then ran .out and ehe, too, was turn bled into the pile. A 16 - year - old Son of Shoemaker's then went in to pro tect his mother and was also beaten by the infuriated and crazed father. neighbors reported the matter to the sheriff, who sent a couple of deputies out who arrested Shoemaker and brought him to town, lodging him In Jail. Three affidavits have been filed against him. One is for assault and battery on Mrs. Brenner, another is for public intoxication and the third is for surety of the peace. He was tried this morning on the assault and battery case and was fined $25 and costs. In delivering the prisoner and mittimus to the sheriff, Justice France gave him the other two War rants and said that he wanted him brought before him to answer to the other charges as soon as his term of Jailment on the assault and battery case expires. An affidavit was filed in Huser'a court this morning charging Newton LaRue, bartender for Christian Wlttc, with having sold liquor on Sunday, contrary to the statutes. Witteafew minutes before had been fined in the municipal court for Sabbath desecration.
