Canaphell'a Last Work; The amendment was Introduced by Alder man Campbell of the Twelfth Ward, who an nounced that this waa the- the- last important measure be would, ever introduce in the counclL The amendment referred: back to th original ordinance fixing the limits of the Lake Front Park, where the northern boundary was placed at Jackson street- street- Hi amendment provided that tho limit be extended to Monro street and that the grounds now occupied by the Art Institute be Included la th tract given over to the park commissioners. This wss done, he announced, at th request of the commissioners, and gave them the right to beautify and Improve the grounds surrounding the institute until the environment and the building should not be so discordant as they now ar. ; Another ordinance which was Introduced at the same time and bore on the same subject provided that a tract of land 1.300 feet long and V00 feet wide should be set aside for the Field Columbian Museum, The central line of the tract was to be Congress street. Alderman Coughlin of the First Ward was the conspicuous opponent of the' amend ment. In one of his characteristic 'and for tunately inimitable speeches tie said; I would give them park commissioners something, only they're such a lot of aristocratic aristocratic bloke that . I ain't got na use for them. - .- .- i i Notwithstanding; all the eloquence of the Demosthenes of the First Ward th amend ment was passed by a vote of 48 to 1L
