Murray, Luther end 13th straight winning season Special to Tha Courier-Journal MURRAY, Ky. The 19-5 record compiled by Murray State University's basketball team this season is the best winning percentage (79.2) for a Murray team since 1943 when Joe Fulks and company was 23-3. Murray romped over Middle Tennessee 92-69 in its final game of the season to run its Ohio Valley Conference record to 10-4 and tie Eastern Kentucky for second place in the conference. The season marked the fifth in a row that Murray either won the league championship or finished second. It also gave Murray and Coach Cal Luther 13 straight winning seasons, a record that is matched by only a handful of schools in the nation. Luther has now won 208 games and lost 122 at Murray. His OVC record is 110-70. Before coming to Murray as coach, Luther compiled a 48-37 record at DePauw, giving him a career record of 256-159, one of . the best in the nation for active coaches. Murray set two school and OVC records this season, both for field goal percentages. It set a single-game record by hitting 61.8 percent of its shots against Austin Peay and a season record by hitting 50.2 percent. Jimmy Young became the seventh-highest scorer in Murray's history by finishing his career with 1,128 points. Hector Blondet is eighth with 1,009 points. Young set a career record for free throw percentage by connecting on 84.6 percent of his gratis shots, and Blondet set a field goal percentage record by connecting on 50.2 percent of his attempt in three years. Frosh go undefeated j Young was the team's leading scorer with 16.1 points a game. Les Taylor averaged 15.8, Blondet 14.5, Ron Johnson 9.4, Bill Mancini 8.5, and Ron Williams 8.4. Johnson was the leading re-bounder with 9.8 a game. Taylor had 8.9. Four players, Young, Blondet, Johnson, and Gary Stevenson, finished their eligibility with the season. However, since Murray's freshman were 21-0 for the season, prospects for future winning seasons look good. The frosh were the first basketball team in Murray's history to go undefeated. - Marcelous Starks, 6-8 center, led the team in both scoring (19.6) and rebounding (20.6). Steve Bowers averaged 19.3 points, Steve Barrett 17.0, Mark House 15.9, and Rick Weismah 12.0. ;
