At tbe close of the football season, marked by the match played on -Saturday afternoon between England and Scotland, and won by England, we are naturally inclined to join in the general paean on our national athletics. But it should be remembered remembered that our cricketers and footballers, our cycliate and pedestrians, represent a small minority of onr young men. The majority of them are prevented prevented hy circumstances (or have not the energy to overcome them) from taking part in the healthy amusements and morally bracing exercises of modern athleticism. That is not so on the continent, continent, where every able-bodied young man is S assed through the army. We do not compare rilling and marching and military discipline with the individual skill, the thrill of competitioH, and the moral training given in our own games and sports ; but they are better than the systematic inertia practised by a considerable proportion of our town-bred«youth8, and too often varied only by tobacco, dram-drinking, gambling, and tbe mental dissipation of reading cheap trash,
