Asks Vegetables, To Be Canned for Wood River Relief Only 1700 of 3000 Cans Available Filled So Far WOOD RIVER, Sept. 13.— Need for extra vegetables to be canned at the Wood River towaihlp relief relief cannery in East Alton-Wood River Community High School was described to the Wood River Woman's Woman's Club by Mrs. M. F. Manning Manning of the relief commission here, and by Mrs. Ralph Volz.who Is supervising the operations of preserving the vegetables and fruits. Staples raised in the community relief gardens and obtained from other sources have enabled the canning crew to fill but 1700 of the 300 cans supplied by the state government, Mrs. Volz told the club last night. In view of the fact that the growing season Is nearing an end, she pointed out, the margin between between the amount canned and the amount which could be presedved with the equipment on hand is rather large. Mrs. Volz and Mrs. Manning joined In a plea not only to club members but to the public for any extra vegetables and fruit which might be grown in private gardens, gardens, and which probably would not be consumed by those growing growing them.
