Wildcats take 2nd at district, qualify 14 for sill track melt •The Humboldt track squad qualified 14 men for state and earned a second place finish at the Class A District Track meet Friday evening at Clear Lake. Humboldt qualified Craig Whittlesey (high jump), John Blanchard (discus), and Al Benson (pole vault) in the field events. 'Bob Nielsen, Dennis Hart, Duane Nelson, John Kirkpatrick, Bob Damstetter, Dave Sorenson, Dave Brownfield, Mike Han-. son, John Larson, Dave Pooch and Art Zanders all qualified for the state meet in running events. To qualify for the state meet an individual or relay team must • either finish first or second in the district meet, meet a predetermined state standard, or achieve a better time or distance than a first* place finisher in, another district. .The Humboldt squad, which took second behind Eagle Grove, qualified the 440 and 880 relay teams, and the mile, mile medley and two mile relay quartets. The 440 relay team of John Larson, Bob Damstetter, Art Zanders and Bob Nielsen copped first with a 45.5 clocking. The 880 quartet of John Kirkpatrick, Damstetter, Zanders and Nielsen took second in 1:32.8. A season's best 8:14.1 time helped John Kirkpatrick, Duane Nelson, Dave Brownfield and Mike Hanson win the two mile relay. The mile medley and mile relay teams both earned thirds but had fast enough times to qualify for the state meet. Larson, Zanders, Dave Pooch and Hanson were timed in 3:50.2 in the medley. Sorenson, Kirkpatrick, Damstetter and Brownfield were clocked at 3:30.8 in the mile. Craig Whittlesey and Bob Nielsen were Humboldt's in- dlvidual'winners. Whittlesey took his specialty, the high jump, with a 6-0 leap. Nielsen ran :10.5. to win the centry. Blanchard's 147 foot toss was good for second behind Eagle Grove's Tanner, generally rated as the state's best Class A weightman. Al Benson's 12 foot vault met the state standard to qualify him in the pole vault. Dennis Hart took third in the high hurdles with a 16.2 clocking. His time qualified him for the state meet since it was faster than the winning time in another district. Duane Nelson's third place half mile time of 2:04.9 was also faster than another district's winning time, qualifying him for state. Humboldt travels to Webster City this Friday for the conference meet and yet another dual with Eagle Grove. The state meet will be held May 22 at Cedar Rapids.
