CURRY Of the Post-Dispatch Staff The person responsible for the three recent bombings, two of them fatal, in south St. Louis County might be "someone with a mental problem or who is deranged," County Police Capt. E. J. Hanneken said today. Mrs. Shirley Marie Flynn, 33, was killed yesterday when a bomb blew apart her automobile. Robert C. Jackson, 39 was killed Oct. 18 in a similar explosion of his car. Ronald T. Sterghos, 23, was not hurt Oct. 7 when a low-yield explosion went off under his car. Hanneken saia at a news conference that investigators would consult a psychiatrist to come up with "a profile of someone who might do something like this." "We're leaning now to the theory that they were random bombings," Hanneken said. "There is nothing in the background of any of the victims to indicate a motive." Meanwhile, the St. Louis County Board UNTRAINED PERSONS would find it almost impossible to determine whether an automobile has been rigged with a bomb. Page 3A SHIRLEY MARIE FLYNN, the latest person to die in a bomb blast in her car, apparently had no enemies. Page 3A of Poice Commissioners established a $20,000 reqard for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the killing of Miss Flynn and Jackson. The board has solicited businesses and financial institutions to contribute to the reward fund, set up a the National Bank of Affton. Jim Elder, agent in charge of the St. Louis office of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau of the Department of the Treasury, stopped short of full endorsement of the "mad bomber" theory. He did say: "We're unable to find anything at this time to connect these three victims together." Hanneken sa!d that police alreadv had discounted' as irrelevant the fact that the two persons who were killed were customers of the same south St. Louis County automobile agency. Teams of investigators composed of one federal agent from Elder's office and one county police officer are focusing on the bombings, all of which occurred within a two mile radius. All days off have been canceled for homicide detectives in the county police department so the investigation can be continued with full force. Hanneken urged all residents of south St. Louis County to check their automobiles, keep them in lighted areas and to report if anyone unknown was seen working on an automobile. Hanneken, Elder and one of Elder's investigation supervisors held the press conference. Elder had said earlier: "There is no evidence to support either random bombings or target bombings. The last thing we want is panic." Hanneken said the bombings "do not See BOMBINGS, Page 6
