Eutler Field House, Indianapolis, March 19—The Jasper Wildcats, a letam the so-called experts completely overlooked, are the state basketball champs of Indiana proving that a squad equipped with fighting hearts as big as watermelons and the will to win could overcome all obstacles. The Wildcats culminated four weeks of amazing accomplishments by completely dominating a favored Madison quintet in the finals tonight in connected twice from the black bar j for Madison but White’s free throw for Jasper made it 51 to 49 with 4:50 seconds to go. Litchfield was shaken loose unde ’ ! the basket and Dimp Stenftenagei scored from long range but Sclmait- j ter followed for the Cubs. Monroe hit a one-hander and i then tied it up with three minutes . and five seconds to go with two free j (Continued on Page 8> Butler Field House 62 to 61. The Wildcats had everything tonight against the speedy, tall club.: They had accuracy in the form of j B V White, Tom Schütz and Dimp Stenftenagei. They had rebound mastery in the form of' Buzz Rumbach, Bill Litchfield. Sten- ¿tenagel and Johnny Berg. And they had hustle and fight, displayed by all of these plus Sommy Allen who filled in capably at guard. In short, the Wildcats were determined to be state champs and they are. Jasper swept Coach Ray Eddy’s team off their feet from the opening tip-off. Bob White hit a one- hander. Buzz did tooand repeated, giving Jasper a six to nothing margin and Madison called for time. Tom Schütz connected fast breaking to make it 8-0 before Monroe broke the ice for the Cubs with a pair of free throws. From then on it was a battle royal between Jasper and Monroe. The plucky Madison forward almost single handed wrecked Jasper’s title dreams. A tip-in by fcYhnaitter closed the first quarter with Jasper ahead 15-8. In the second quarter Monroe really blew hot. The Cub sharp- snooter rang in 18 of Madison’s 20 oints as the Cubs crept within three points at the half, 31-28. In that quarter Dimp Stenftenagei <„ot three buckets in leading Jasper’s attack. Both teams continued to batter that basket with regularity in the third quarter. Madison bounced within two points, 31 ( to 29, but Schulz, White and then ! Scliutz stretched it again. Schütz j and Dimp hit to make it ten points f(r a 41-31 score. But then Monroe began picking up again. Getting some help from big Spence Schnaitter, they drew to 41-39. A free throw by Rumbach and a follow shot by the Wildcat center boosted, the Wildcat margin at the end of the third frame to 45 to 40. Schnaitter tipped for Madison and Ed Cheatham pumped a long one hander to close the gap to 45-44. Then with six minutes and eight seconds to go Monroe tied up the score at 45-45 with a free throw.
