Goats Start New Season With Ten Letter men GROESBECK (Spl.) — What do you do when you're a new coach at a school with a 6-3-1 record showing for last year and you've got 10 returning lettermen. eight of which were starters? Think positive? That's exactly what head coach Clifton Darden is doing about the 1971 edition of the Groesbeck Goats and flatly states that he has a "good team" this year. After coaching for five years at Hubbard, Coach Darden is beginning his first year with the District 19-AA Goats. The head mentor says the Goats look where they should be this time year but admits "McGregor whopped us around in a scrimmage last week." All-star potential in the Goat camp this year could be left halfback Larry Van Dyke, a junior, and tackle John McCarver, a senior. McCarver weighs in a 260 and according to Darden, "moves really well and is going to make a fine player this year." Handling the quarterback duties this year will be Ricky Rand, a junior, while senior Charles Vest has got the nod for center. Others on the line include senior Kenneth Wilson, a senior Jeff Adams as guards, Wesley White, senior, as the other tackle. Junior Charles Lewis and junior Mark Champion will be covering the ends. Making up the backfield will be right halfback Mike Wilson, a junior; and fullback Kenneth Nems, a junior. Defensive starters not on offense will be halfback Cap Prince, a junior; linebacker Kirby Hyden, junior; tackle Robert Radford; a senior; and tackle David Burkeen, senior. Darden and his assistants O.B. Casey and Lorenzo Miles lead the Goats in battle against their first opponent Sept. 10 when they play Calvert. They'll meet powerhouses Rosebud-Lott and Mart later in the season irr district play. GROESBECK, Home Of The OUR
