New Deputies Appointed By Sheriff Muir Haherlein And . Staup Replacing Smith And Chappell The positions of two; deputy sheriffs were changed in a shakeup shakeup tha-t became public this morning morning in the office of Sheriff Edward R. Muir. Two new deputies are Paul C. Haberlein, West Main Street, Frostburg, police commissioner of that city, and George B. Staup, Lonaconing. They replace William J. Chap- poll and Robert W. Smith. Surprise Move The move came as a. surprls* in county political circles as Chappell Chappell had been a deputy under Sheriff Muir since April fl, 1947, Smith wa s appointed June 1, 1953. The oath of' office wa.s administered administered to the sheriff and his five deputies, Haberlein, Staup, Edgar M. Lewis, George Harris and Louis Helman. Sheriff Muir said Lewis will remain remain as cjiief deputy. Lewis ii in his 13th year as a depuft. Haberlein, according to Court House officials, must resign his position as police commissioner in- Frostburg as no person , can hold two positions of public p : rofit and trust in Maryland. World War Veteran 1 . Haberlein is a veteran'of World War II and has been a driver and vice president of the -Peoples' Transit Company. He previously was a driver for th-e- C&W Transit Company. He served one two- year term as street commissioner in Frostburg and 121 April was re-elected to the city council, and was appointed police cornmission- jer. He is president of the Frostburg Frostburg Fire Deps-rtment. According to the Frostburg city charter, the council appoints a successor successor to any vacancy in the council. That body will meet Monday night. Staup is a native and a life resi- dent of Lonaconing.
