FtiW-.lMKE/l NEEDKD What this country needs as much as anything today Is another "Danbury News Man"--another James --Montgomery Bailey. ;: We need the saving grace of · humor, the kind of wholesome, non- exhibitionist humor that charact- [ .. erlzed Mr. Bailey's every writings of commonplace people ana oay-cy- ~day happenings, _ We have seli-confessed humorists I .'today, barrels of them. They . con- .duct columns and write wise-cracks I -. and pose ar.d strut through | ~ paper and magazine columns ana t 'make scads of money. -" And they're clever, too, damnably, . clever. Ar.d sophisticated and ultra. -this and ultra-that. But mostly their humor is of the I -cruel, not to say vicious, kind. They tear down and they are sardonic rather than comical, sarcastic and ironical rather than amusing. People have changed, of course, since the Danbury News man amused the country so wholesomely. The _mild sort of "funning" that he per- "pertalcd forty and fifty years ago seems pretty tame today. But In 'his day and generation it was highly amusing; It made people smile 'and laugh and It was wholesome : and stimulating. We have nothing .today that docs for us what that kind of huirujr did for the men and women of the Seventies and Eighties and early Nineties--and we're 'the poorer because we have cot.
