totaled 1,634 during the month of at at East Alton Buys Compact Police Car EAST ALTON — Members of the village board Tuesday night approved a bid of $1,870.74 submitted by the Stuart Motor Co of Wood River as the cost of a four-door Valiant car to be used by the local police department Other firms submitting bids were; Albrecht Chevrolet Inc. Edwardsville road; Carter Motor Co., 315 N. Wood River Ave.; Gloss Motor Co., 78 ^E. Lorena Ave., Roberts Motors Inc., 200 W. Ferguson and -Trotter Motor Co., 49 E. Edwardsville Rd., of Wood River. Mayor Charles Vanpreter said that members of the police department gave a car from each Firm a test drive to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each. In other business the board passed an appropriation of $36,DOO to be used from the motor fuel tax fund for the maintenance of local arterial streets from Jan. 1, 1960 to Dec. 31, 1960. The figure represents an approximate increase of $8,000 over last year's figure. The increase as with many other things is due to increased material and labor cost, board members said. A letter from Francis Manning village attorney, informing the board that he has filed an amended petition in County Court on behalf of the village for the removal of a structure at the southwest corner o| Shamrock and Ferguson streets was read. Manning's original petition was protested by attorneys for the owner when it was presented at a hearing in the county court. A group of nine Wopd River Community High School students visited the session as part of a sociology course they are studying in school. Bills totaling $8,877.59 were approved. of
