PAUL HARVEY... Passport May Restrict Gus Hall's Freedom Gus Hafl is the head Red in the United States. And since none dares call it treason. , . With the blessing of our courts, he has been putting Communists on ballots, on campus soap boxes and himself much in public print. But applause is a dreadful narcotic. And Gus has been feeling his oats, taking the bit in his own teeth, straining against the Moscow party line. E l s e w h e r e , when one of the Kremlin 7 field generals required discipline, Moscow would summon him "home." Not infrequently, they have died there. But Gus Hall has at once been restrained and protected by our State Department's travel ban. He was conveniently prevented from returning to Russia for one of those closed- door sessions. Now, for better or worse, our travel ban has been modified; Gus Hall has been issued a passport. He says he "welcomes the opportunity to travel for pleas- 'ure and study . . ." He sounds like a man on his way to an Elks' convention . . . But he somehow looks more like a boy on his way to a dental appointment. You see, Gus Hall, in an open party meeting in New York City last Feb. 25, publicly criticized the Soviets. He lashed out at the arrest and imprisonment of two .eminent Soviet authors. Back in Russia, a Soviet JIM BISHOP... court found the two "guilty.** In Moscow, Izvestia labeled their actions "high treason." In the East Coast Communist p u b l i c a t i o n , these authors were berated for their "pandering, cold war slander, socially irresponsible conniving, double dealing . . ." Gus Hall's abrupt about face confused a lot of people. And distressed the home office Kremlinkrats. I'm not saying that our Department is purposely allowing Hall to go to Moscow watch him squirm; historically, State is not that imaginative. But there is mounting evidence, nonetheless, that Moscow might roll out the red carpet for Gus . . . give it a yank that'll send sprawling. A "secret" Red School has been located^ raided and exposed in T o r o n t o . Communists blame Gus. Further, state-side comrades who dig deep to provide the funds, dues, assessments, contributions which party headquarters demands, are reportedly growing restive when see Hall living lavishly in a '"bourgeoise" suburban neighborhood, commuting in a new chauffeur-driven limousine to his Wall St.-type office in Manhattan. Clothes, food, wine -a personal sauna bath -- Gus goes Capitalist all the way! So while the head Red in United States has been condam- ming (cq) our society, he has been enjoying it immensely. And out of reach from his Soviet enforcers ... until now.
