12-2-86 - Pirates By JIM KIMBALL JG Sports Editor TOLEDO...
Pirates By JIM KIMBALL JG Sports Editor TOLEDO Cumberland won 14 games and two trophies last season. The Pirates claimed consolation honors in the Vandalia Holiday Classic and third place in the Little Illini Conference Tourney while en 'route to compiling 314-12 season-record. They failed to win the Marshall Regional Tourney. Coach Rick Manuell wants "15 or more victories and one additional trophy" this time around. He didn't say it, but that "one additional trophy" would have to come from regional play. It is the Manuell: Experience is No.l strength of our team only other tourney his club will compete in. - There's no reason to believe his tall, talented and experienced Pirates will have any trouble gathering that much bounty or more. The third-year Cumberland coach, who directed the Pirates to a 12-13 record his first year, , returns seven lettermen and all five starters. Headlining the list is leading scorer (16.8) Kevin Matteson, a 6-foot-3 senior forward who also found time to pull dpwn 12 rebounds a game. after 3 Teaming with him to form Manuell's starting lineup in tonight's opening game at Alta-mont will be senior jumpingjack Steve Robbins, who has grown two inches since last season to 6-2, 6-4 junior Scott Wilson, who also has sprung up two inches, six-foot junior Nate Jackson and six-foot sophomore Brad Oakley. Rounding out the list of returning - lettermen are 6-6 -senior;, center -Todd Butler, who has added a full inch to his frame, and 5-8 senior guard Brian Paul. "Experience is the No.l strength of our team," Manuell says. "We've got three starters, Butler, Robbins and Matteson back from last season. They're all three-year varsity members. "The fact that all of the lettermen know their roles will make us a strong team., We will be counting on . Matteson to score inside and rebound, Butler to rebound, Wilson to score and rebound, Robbins to score and rebound although we were counting on him originally to just score, Oakley to score, Paul to pick up our play and spark the defense and Nate (Jackson) to give us some rebounding. "Offensively, we "will be looking for more people to score this season. We've got several players who can score and we want them all contributing. All of the kids are aware that is what we want and need if we're to have a successful team." Manuell is also quick to point out that his players have more than just shooting and jumping abilities. "I know you hear coaches say it all the time, but the attitude of these kids has been great," he , says. "We've really got a good sit- trophies, 15 or more X " . t I inn, Lwhm i 1 Lettermen Kevin Matteson, uation going wiyi our kids and team. The environment has been good and we're really forward to a fun season." Asked about p o s s Kb 1 e weaknesses, Manuell paused for SL-vciai seconds and then responded, "I. worry about injuries. It seems every year we lose a kid for a few games due to an injury or sickness of some sort. I just hope we can avoid all of that this season." Manuell views Martinsville as the team to beat in the Little Illini Conference race. "Obviously, we feel we will be better and hope to contend (for league honors)," Manuell says. Cumberland will get an early idea of how its stacks up.
