Paskenta-Flournoy Road Tragedy Two Men Die In One-Car CORNING -- Sgt. Vernon Lauren Whitlock of Paskenta, and James Fredrick Weston, Flournoy, both 21, and members of early day Paskenta-Flournoy families, were dead on arrival at Corning Memorial Hospital at 4:15 a.m., yesterday, following a one-car accident that occurred about one mile east of Paskenta on the Corning-Paskenta Road. Their companions, Roy Burt, 25, of Paskenta, driver of the car, and Steven Bohme, 21, of Corning are hospitalized with contusions and abrasions. According to the Highway Patrol, the late model car in which the four were riding, went out of control and overturned, pinning Weston underneath. Following the accident, Burt and Bohme walked into Paskenta where they notified a relative of Burt's, who brought them into the hospital. The car was completely demolished. Sgt. Whitlock, a member of the 101st Airborne Division, was home on leave from Ft. Hood, Wash., after returning from duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat in Vietnam, Sept. 20,1970. He was squad leader of Company D, Third Battalion, 506th Infantry for a reconnaissance mission during which his platoon was pinned down by hostile fire. Specialist Whitlock in an attempt to repeal the attack, organized his squad and led it forward. Encountering a North Vietnamese soldier, he engaged the enemy but was simultaneously struck in the chest by a grenade mortar round which failed to detonate. Immediately recovering from the impact, he continued to direct his men in defeating the enemy force He was promoted to Sergeant in November. He was a native of Red Bluff, born Aug, 7, 1949. He attended Corning High School and entered entered the Army in July, 1969. He was a member of the Paskenta- Flournoy Community Church. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Whitlock; a brother Douglas; sisters Caroline and Rebecca, and grandfather, Fred W. Whitlock, all of Paskenta; a grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Hampshire, Colusa, and grandfather, Lauren Bushman, Forbestown Weston was born March 19, 1949, in Corning, and attended Corning High School where he was active in Future Farmers America. He was employed the U.S. Forest Service on a surveying crew for the engineering department. He was a member of the Quar- terhorse Association. He is survived by his Mr. and Mrs Arthur Weston Flournoy; a brother John A Paskenta, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray D Head, Cnico. Double funeral services for Whitlock and Weston will be held at 2 p.m , tomorrow in Paskenta-Flournoy Community Church with the Rev Michael Cappiello officiating Burial will be in the Whitlock and Weston family plots in the Paskenta Cemetery under direction of H a l l Brothers M o r t Corning
