Mexican Bracero Import Ball Given Committee GEv Washington -fflPU- -fflPU- -fflPU- The full Agriculture committee hat approved and sent to the Senate Senate floor a bill to extend the Mexican Farm Labor (bracero) Import Bill for two years. The committee dodged the controversial subject of tightening tightening the law so that domestic farm workers will not suffer from the wage competition by braceros. But Sen. Eugene McCarthy (D-Minn.) (D-Minn.) (D-Minn.) said a fight on this point will be made on the , floor. Houi. Bill Amended A committee spokesman said the bill may be ready for Senate action Thursday, but there was no indication as to when it might be called up for debate. The Senate subcommittee Tuesday amended the House-passed House-passed House-passed bill, which called for a simple extension for two years, to read: "No workers (braceros) shall be made available to any employer or permitted to ' remain in the employ of any employer unless the employer offers and pays both to domestic domestic and foreign workers tile wage which has been determined determined by survey by the secretary of labor to be-the be-the be-the wage paid In the area for domestic domestic workers engaged in similar work." To Pay Part of Costs The subcommittee also amended the bill to require farmers to pay part of the government costs Involved in recruiting and transporting the workers to American farms. These payments were limited Ho $15 a worker. The old law had the same dollar limitation, but applied generally generally only to transportation and subsistence. Another amendment would require employers to hire "able, willing and qualified" domestic workers when such workers were referred to them by the local employment employment service. Farmers also would be de nied the use of braceros un less they had made efforts to recruit domestic workers at wages and working conditions offered to Mexicans. The subcommittee specified that no braceros were to be used on any power-driven power-driven power-driven ma chinery and could be used only as seasonal or temporary help, unless the secretary of labor determined there were not sufficient domestic workers workers to fill the jobs.
