HAYS — Donald J. Manke, 71, Hays, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Hays Medical Center. Mr. Manke was born Sept. 4, 1927, at Orlando, Okla., and was a resident of Hays since 1994. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He worked on the police police force in Hutchinson and Hays; was assistant police chief in Plainville; captain of the Arapahoe County, Colo., sheriffs department; department; and taught at the Police Academy in Golden, Colo. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion and Veterans Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Hays. A son, Charles Robert, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home; four sons, Rick of Benson, Ariz., John of Littleton, Littleton, Colo., Doyle of Pueblo, Colo., Colo., and Craig of Hays; four brothers, brothers, Arnhold of Carolton, Ga., Norman Norman of Tallahassee, Fla., and Ed and Paul, both of Hutchinson; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Hays, Pastor Dick Kaczor officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with military rites. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hour or American Heart Association. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays 67601.
