Dr. Newlin of Notre Dame, assisted by Knute Rockne, had the first formula for making synthetic rubber. Mr. Guthrie named many other Hoosiers for ; producing “firsts” in the mechanical mechanical and merchandising , world. j A Hoosier was the first soldier ¡killed in World WTar I, a soldier i from Indiana was the first killed i in the Spanish-Ameriean War and is buried in Arlington Ceme- ■ tery near Washington. Hoosiers had much to do with the devel- ! opment of the atom bomb. Mr. Guthrie then told of many ghost towns in Indiana and he ! related how they were founded | and the peculiar names which they had. He cited the number of towns that had similar names and toid of seven Buena Vistas — and of towns that carried two names, one for the business end of it and the other the post office name. He told of incidents why some towns carried their names — one, Pikes Peak in Brown County, County, a leading business man in the community always wanted to go to Pikes Peak in Colorado and go in business there. W’hen he arrived at Madison on his way west, he saw the Ohio River and imagined how deep it was and he was to travel by boat on the water, that he became acutely homesick and turned back home and built a business on a hign point in Brown County which has since been called Pikes Peak. 1 i
