slacks advice 1939
Wednesday, August 2, 1939 cr - k. Marv I HAMPTON'S Column LOOK BEFORE VOL' WEAR THEM Some women are artists it wearing slacks. But before the rest of us follow their cool pied-pipering it is well to stop and learn the subtle lesson of how to do this modern thing. For modern slacks are pioneering in the field of feminine costuming and for that very reason are pitted with dangers and traps into which the unwary plop. We women are novices still at the Df the wearing of pants. and if you don't j Williams su-believe me, just sit on a shady bench j preme any afternoon this month and watch riemlxr the pants-devotees who pass by. Not j f Ohio. that pants have not arrived as a i ()f the fashion and a summer comfort. They are the outstanding cast lime contribution of this age. But where to wear them, and how to wear them, is still a question that is in a state of riot and until calm and order is lCMJt;e mu-restored, the wearing of pants has its si.-;,l iiu-itrunieiits. dangers. Now take the tremendously important matter of fit. Women who are far too wise to wear a dress whose hem sags dowdily at Uie back, will nevertheless snatch up some bargain slacks for summer (which sag in an infinitely more dangerous place) and wear them without the tiniest alteration. Women who would not buy a winter coat or jack- j et which did not fit their shoulders attractively will, nevertheless, accept slacks which butcher their appearance. For if ever any costume should be fitted exactly to the wearer's body it is pants. Ask any man! And then there are the sad angles of pants and the occasion. Just as a woman of taste and knowing would not 6 shopping in an afternoon party dress so neither will she wear her slacks down into the heart of a large city's shopping district. Like her bathing suit and her house coat slacks, too, have their snecializcd realm. And just what is that generally accepted realm? It is wide in summertime and wider hi our California than anywhere else in the world. But even then it docs have its limitations and above all else .slacks do not belong in metropolitan down-town areas. In Los Angeles a woman mUht "get by." In San Francisco everyone will turn to look in most eastern ci'ies pants would make her a freak. Slacks arc casual clothes for ca-ual hours. Where they do carry real weight is at resorts at home possibly down town in small towns or in neighborhood shopping districts and for play whether it be mountains or sea. Slacks can bo wherever a nice housedress can go or wherever play clothes can go. But when it comes to travel and town the women who want to rate themselves amongst "the knowing'1 just m'jt not wear slacks there. And one lag item more.
