WE desire to call the attention of council to a matter that we are sure •will meet with popular approval. If there is one man above all others. Who has been nobly generous to the city of Hamilton, that man is Mr. Clark Lane. Mr. Lane, at his own expense, and ol his own volition, erected Lane Free library and stocked it with books. This was as noble a gift as any one could make to a city, and its presence in our midst has been conducive of much good and has been greatly appreciated. For the care of those poor little unfortunates, Mr. Lane gave this city and county a commodious building with ample and pleasant surroundings—the Children's Home. Where is there another man who has done as much for Hamilton! And now bis reward. It seems ill-timed to be like the husband who placed on his wife's tombstone the kind words he omitted during her lifetime. There should be in the Lane Tree library a large portral of Mt. Lane, and council should lose no lime In making arrangements to place such a portrait tbere. By placing In the library a painting o the founder and donor, council would only be following In the footsteps of al other cities, who at the earliest oppor- tonity taus honor the man wbo honored
