British at the British ground Arrow MURDER SCENE MODERNIZED AS U,S, STEPS National Guardsmen Visit County Six Times In Eight Years By ALEX McKEDLL HARLAN, Ky., (AP)--The process process of changing Harlan county from a backwoods community to modern industrial center has been a long, bloody'struggle. Twenty - eight years ago on ust 5, 1911, the first carload of coal moved out of Harlan county and since then bloodshed, strife and bitterness have marked the changing changing of an isolated, impoverished community to · a comparatively wealthy, modern industrial region. . Guards Called National guardsmen in Harlan county are no novelty, having here six times in the last eight years.- As one guardsman expressed it: "In the past I have been protecting protecting miners, I have protected Democrats Democrats against Republicans, and Republicans against Democrats. Now we are protecting the operators--so operators--so who in the hell are we supposed to shoot?" Pictorially Harlan county is as peaceful a looking spot as nature could fashion. Round - top hills completely surround the city of Harlan. The -dense foliage hides bare spots and in the late evening and early morning heavy clouds of mist obscure the summits. Beauty Spot
