JOANNA: ACTRESS WRITER Joanna Barnes, the beautiful and brainy young actress who's been a semi-regular semi-regular semi-regular on television's "What's My Line?" for the past five years, and who also combines her TV activities activities with film-acting, film-acting, film-acting, wears still another hat. The modish) blonde actress actress is also an author, with her third book newly-arrived newly-arrived newly-arrived in the book-stores. book-stores. book-stores. This one's called "Who Is Carla Hart?," and it's a quick and compassionate compassionate portrait of a young film star and her gradual retreat from reality. Joanna's first novel (and second book) was "The Deceivers," published three years ago to widespread widespread acclaim and near bcstseller-dom. bcstseller-dom. bcstseller-dom. Writing is not a new game to the former Boston socialite. When she was graduated from Smith College (with a Phi Beta Kappa key intact), she intended to make writing her career. In fact, it was a magazine assignment to do a behind-the behind-the behind-the scenes piece of filmmaking that first brought Joanna to the attention of talent scouts. Within a week, she had a contract and was set to make her acting debut in a telefilm with Louis Jourdan. Since then, she's combined acting with writing, at one point in her career writing book reviews for the Los Angeles Times, at another doing a regular column on interior decorating, at which she is a pro. Her first book, indeed, was on that subject and was titled, "Starting From Scratch." Now a firmly established member of the writing profession, Jo? urn's already plotting her next novel. She's even started searching out a small office to rent, where she can work undisturbed. She's done each of her books in rented isolation, and as soon as the new quarters are found, she'll set to work on what will (if it follows the pattern of its predecessors) take eight to nine months to complete, with Joanna working seven days a week, four to five hours a day at her typewriter. Life could be cushy and carefree for Joanna Barnes, born as she was to wealth and ease. But she's one artist who doesn't yearn to rest on her laurels. Some 20 films and three separate TV series of her own in the past, plus literally hundreds of guests appearances on all the top TV series, plus a 5-year 5-year 5-year run on "What's My Line?," all attest to the fact that Joanna loves to work, and works hard. Acting, writing, creating are what she thrives on, and she's energetically energetically intent on juggling her multi-careers multi-careers multi-careers multi-careers for a few decades yet to come! r .... .:'- .:'-
