He wsa appointed third lieutenant '. in the revenue service April 22. ISti&V He was promoted to second Heutensnt June 6. 1866, commissioned first lieutenant Jury 20, 1876, snd was made a captain in the service March 21. 1885. Prior to his entry into the revenue service hs was a volunteer officer in the .United States nsvy.
