TWILIGHT r Settles 'Round . Him. Wm. Christie Herron Reported in Critical Condition. Was Advocate, of Universal Peace and Prominent in Business and Charity Life of City. William Christie Herron, noted advocate of universal peace and one of Cincinnati's most prominent citizens, is In a critical condition at his home, 946 Red ay avenue, Avondale. His end is hourly expected, and his entire family have gathered at the bedside. bedside. Dr. Elisabeth Campbell is in con stant attendance, and she haa little hope for Mr. Herron's recovery. Both as a business man and aa a citizen William Christy Herron has been prom inent in Cincinnati's history. He was bora on September 1, 1S43. in the old Herron homestead at the corner of Fifth and Pike streets. His father was Prof, Joseph Her ron, proprietor of the old Herron Seminary, which for many years held a prominent place among the. city's early educational institutions. Mr. Herron received his education at his father's school. He was but 18 years of age when the Civil War began. He at once enlisted in the navy and served throughout throughout the war. At the close of the war he returned to Cincinnati and took a position with the hardware firm of Howell. Gano & Co. A few years later he became a member member of the firm of Giren & Herron at Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, and removed to that city. his rresT WIFE. In 19T3 he married Miss Laura Winchell, a daughter of George B. Winchell, proprietor proprietor of the Winchell Manufacturing Company Company in this city. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Herron connected himself with the firm of Rogers. Brown & Co.. pig iron merchants of this city. He retained an interest In this concern concern until 1801. when he retired from active business life for a time because of Hi health. He Is now Interested in a number of well-known well-known well-known firms In and about the Queen City. He is a Director in the Fifth-Third Fifth-Third Fifth-Third National National Bank, a Director of the American Rolling Mill Company at Middletown. and a Directors of the Hanging Rock Iron Company.. Company.. He is Interested In many charitable Institutions, being a member of the Book Committee of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Vice President of the Young Men's Christian Association, a trustee of Christ's hospital and Deaconess Home, trustee of the Children's Home and a Director of the Associated Charities. Mr. Herron was one of the most active members of the Loyal Legion and took an active interest in the affairs of the organisation. ADVOCATE OF UNIVERSAL. PEACE. While he served his country well during the great civil strife he was an advocate of universal peace. He spent much time In this work. When the Baroness von Sutt- Sutt- ner, who Is considered the foremost cham pion of universal peace, visited America about two years ago, she paid a visit to Cincinnati in special recognition of Mr. Herron's work In this cause. He was Vice President of the Cincinnati branch of the Universal Peace Society and for several years served as President. Of late years his health has Interfered greatly with his many charitable works. but he has always been considered one of Cincinnati's most prominent public benefactors. benefactors. He took a great Interest in the work of the church and was President of the Board of Trustees of the Forest Avenue Avenue M. E. Church. No business enterprise was ever too big to prevent his attendance attendance at any of the services held In this edifice when he was in good health. In 1886 Mr. Herron married a second time. His wife was Miss Anna Fish, of this city. Mrs. Herron Is at present a prominent member of the Woman's Club and takes an active Interest in social affairs. He has two sons George Winchell Herron, who is at present connected with Armour & Co.. of Chicago, and stationed at Calgary. Alberta. Alberta. Canada, and Mason P. Herron, who is Secretary of the Hanging Rock Iron Company. He has one sister, Miss Delia Herron. of this city, and one brother. Dr. Thomas G. Herron. a of
