50 Years Ag< In and About Alton May 25, 1889 Mis. J. A. Auten was having her house at the corner of Front and Easton streets, an old landmark, torn down and planned to have another structure* erected In its place. I. H. Keiser was having an addition made to his property at Second and Easton streets. Among applicants who had passed the examination in Appellate court at Springfield were James P. Thornton of Alton and William P. Earley and Riley Owens of Edwardsville. All were expected to hang out their shingles as lawyer* within a short time. Charles J. Degenhardt was completing arrangements to remove his stationery and fancy goods store to the building at the southeast corner of Second and Ridge streets which was nearing completion.
