First Audubon County Dane Came in 1869 In the western part of Audubon county anc i the east part of Shelby county, is one of the largest settlements of Danish people in the United States. Although the population of that part of the county has become become somewhat mixed over tne past 10 years, it is still predominately predominately Danish. Up to 10 years ago, Elk Horn and Kimballton boasted of an approximate 9§ percent Danish population. The first Dane to settle In this area was Chris Johnson, better known to old settlers as "Old Chris." He lived on a homestead in Shelby county county near the northwest corner of Oakfield township about two miles south of the present present town of Elk Horn. In the early days he was instrumental instrumental in •• settling several Danish people in the western part of Audubon county. These people came directly from Denmark to his place and lived with him to learn the language language of the country and the methods methods of agriculture. Johnson aided them in buying and improving their lands and in making their initial start at home building and farming. The first Dane to settle in Audubon Audubon county was Jens U. Hansen, Hansen, who came in 1869 from Shelby Shelby county and lived temporarily in a shanty in the north part of section 5, Exira Township, near the home of John W. Dodge. Hansen was a carpenter and a very industrious man. He worked worked with Dodge and helped build a big barn on a piece of land known as the Pray place, later for Charles ^l T V" Exira in ]871 and the J«,h n D .
