'Look Homeward Angel' Has Spiraled Area Pop Group to Top By SUSAN SCOTT It's hard to Imagine a local contemporary modern pop group could be denting the record world across the nation, but the Velvet Crest of Mineral City Is doing its best to prove ii can be done with its first na- tionwide release, Look Homeward Homeward Angel. Members of the group — Terry Terry vSt. George, Dave Barlos and Joel Gordon, all of Mineral City and Jeff Kerekes of Magnolia will will appear Saturday at 5 p.m. on Upbeat which is telecast on VVEWS Channel 5, Cleveland, to promote the record. Look Homeward Angel was recorded in November arid released released from New York Jan. 27 on Harbour Record label, a branch of Buddah Records. In 5 weeks the record has sold 50,000 Besides a change of name, the Velvet Crest have changed their singing style and have purchased an all velvet wardrobe. Showing off a set of Edwardian velvet suits imported from England are the 4 members of the group — Dave Bartos (L), Joel Gordon, Jeff Kerekes and Terry St. (it'orge. copies & record surpassed by only one other Ohio group The Outsiders. The record was. introduced as pick-hit on WHLO radio Akron-Canton Akron-Canton where it has risen to number one in northern Ohio in that time. It jumped from 34 to It on last week's WINW's Win bonder List with better ratings expected this week. Nearly all types stations are playing the une. Look Homeward Angel has been introduced as a future hit m stations In Dallas, Texas; lartford, Conn.; Erie, Pa.; Schenectady, N.Y. and Seattle, Mash, to mention a few. Many Ohio stations are playing the long regularly. In the Feb. 15 issue of Record World, the "bible" for disc jockeys, jockeys, music publishers and music music personalities, Look Homeward Homeward Angel was chosen as one of 8 out of several hundred possibilities possibilities as the tune to watch. The Velvet Crest will headline concert in Canton Memorial Auditorium Easter Sunday from 4 to 8, a distinction held by no other group in northern Ohio. Admission will be $1.50 with ickets available in the county at a later date and at the door. Appearing with the group will be Hobson's Choice, Blue Soul, Town dryer and special guest, Teeny Tim. Radio WHLO personality personality Joe Cunningham will emcee. The concert will kick off a tour which will start in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh the following night and is tentatively scheduled for stops in Columbus, Indianapolis and Milwaukee. The tour, will include include several colleges and ma- lor television appearances. The Velvet Crest is managed by Nick R. Boldi, who has written written songs recorded by 'Pat Boone. LaVerne Baker, Cvas Craddock and Pee Wee King. He also wrote the Chydls first hit, Psychedelic Soul.
