T Jim Staley Found Guilty of Shooting Deputy Marshal Reece. IPractlcally the entire session of the Federal Court yesterday was devoted to the trial of Jim! Staley, a Moore County negro, on the charge of shooting shooting and seriously wounding Deputy Marshal H. C. Reece,' March 20, 1908, while Reece and a number of other officers were raiding blockade distilleries in Moore County. s He was shot from ambush, and Reece identified identified Staley as the man who shot him. He is corroborated bya number of the other officers. Staley escaped at the time of the shooting and was not cantured until September when he was located in Davidson County, where he was passing as Will Wel- Wel- born, brother of George Welborn, a negro of the Davidson section. : The prisoner admits that he was passing under; a false name In Davidson, but insists that he is not Jim Staley and that he was not present when Reece was shot.
