'Bow Back Pay is Obtained. 'I do not wonder,1" aaid State Auditor Rico this morning, "that the Pension De partment at WasbnSgton is so slow aud care ful in granting pensions on documentary evidence, for the experience of Governor Gray, General Koontz and myself in consid ering the claim for back pay from members of the Indiana Legion has convinced' me that too great care can not be j exercised in such matters. We paid - off one company on the affidavit of the members that thev bad I actual ser vice from five to eight months, and since then fcome of them have been openly boasting that they never bad a gun in their bands daring tnat time. When, tbe Legisla ture made tbe appropriation for tbe pay ment of these claims, it had no idea of the xtent of them, for we have received applica tions, supported by affidavits, irons eighteen or nineteen companies in Jefferson county alone. The consequence was, we were com pelled to call a halt on the whole thing and pay none ot tucm."
