Civil War Draft Agent Lost Life in Notifying Draftees A tombstone In a cemetery near Washington, Ind., bears this curious curious inscription: "In memory of Eli McCarty . . . killed while notifying notifying drafted men." Wounded in one of the early battles battles of the Civil war, Captain Mc-Cartv Mc-Cartv Mc-Cartv left the Union army m March, 1862, and became a government government agent enrolling men for the draft. Aroused by the news of the draft a group of southern sym pathizers vowed to shoot a government government agent on sight. McCarty was their unfortunate victim.
